Phreedh's various sci-fi (25/4: More models, pg3)

Just thought I'd post this lad up. I'll continue adding models and characters as and when they're painted. I have two more done, just need basing and photographing, and several in the works. Yay, scifi!

So, here's Paulie Papers. Intergalactic punk, plotter of plans and holder of documents. More on the blog thing: http://ministuff.godzilla.se/?p=1080

More to come, hopefully.

Re: My various 40K and other sci-fi

As I said elsewhere, Im very enthisastic about this change of artistic direction, this "Phreedhian slip" if you will.

I cant wait to see some more :)

Re: My various 40K and other sci-fi

I occasionally feel a little guilty dragging people towards sci-fi but the I see figures like this and all the guilt goes away! Good job! I've got this figure somewhere and now you've made want to paint him and his buddies. Excellent stuff!

Re: My various 40K and other sci-fi

Thanks chaps!

Paul, I did have a bit of Wacko Jacko in mind when I painted the red and gold. Originally intended for the coat to be much brighter but fell in the old mechrite red trap. I really like mechrite red.

It's been a long time coming, but your recent piratey goodness is one of the factors that made me take the plunge. Other notable notables off the top of my head are Cheetor, Jonas and Blue. I blame you all. =)

Guilty? Never. Not even for a second :)

I figured as much. The brocade is very suggestive of MJ and hard to ignore. Sometimes its best to embrace that sort of influence like you did rather than attempt to ignore the elephant in the room.

Have you tried Mephiston Red and to a lesser extent Khorne Red? The both give the same coverage as Mechrite but dont have that slight chalkyness. Not that there is chalkyness in the paint job above or anything, but Mephiston Red in particular is worth a look.

I know it sounds a bit old and tired, but I'm not buying current range GW paints. I don't like the pots much. The last GW paint purchase I did was a batch of washes when the new range was introduced. Prior to that, the foundation paints. I really liked the foundation paints but they dry out sooo easily. =( And I'm a careful type, cleaning my pots and closing them properly.

I only buy vallejo nowadays as I really like their dropper bottles. Saves me having to fish out paint onto the palette. I've been tempted by getting me some classic Coat d'Arms but can't find a decent place to order them from. Silly royal mail and their regulations on international paint shipments. =(

Re: My various 40K and other sci-fi

Got three more models painted up. This is Commander Skroob, the guy in charge on McKemmler IV. He's flanked by two ASOLEs - Automated Sentient Officers of Law Enforcement.

All three are old Spacelords minis from Metal Magic. I've got a few more pics and waffling on the blog:

Re: My various 40K and other sci-fi

Heh. "I'm surrounded by ASOLES".

The grey fatigues turned out really well. If you are shaving time from these paint jobs as planned a quality drop isn't really evident to me.

Great work. It's cool to see some more progress. Keep it up!

Thanks! I am a bit stricter with the fiddling. Less fiddling going on here. Also, I'm using a lot less different paints than I've done with my fantasy stuff. You'll see that on the next two guys I'm finishing up (this weekend, hopefully). It makes a big difference.

And isn't that the point of cutting corners? To remove the excess work you put in that isn't noticeable, getting 80% of the job done in 20% of the total time. I was considering not painting Skroob's eyes but that's a line I won't cross just yet.

I've got two members of the "good guys" league on the blocks now, then it might be time for Johnny Alpha to get some paint.

Absolutely as far as I am concerned.

Im looking forward to it. I hope that you can keep the momentum going.

"You're really a Spaceball, you know that don't you?"

Your quick paintjobs always look damn fine to me too, by the way Phreedh.

Thanks mate!

Now, here's another one. This time, it's a Spacelords C3064b - Cybertech S.E.C.S Troop with heavy laser, giving cover.

He will be known as Captain Morley, an under-appreciated captain of a ship for hire. More background for the character over at my blog:

Re: My various 40K and other sci-fi (2/6: New model, pg 2)

A new addition to the ship's crew. Say hello to co-pilot Stickney and his little friend.

It's still Spacelords (as I foolishly vowed to not paint any Citadel minis this year to show you can have fun and Oldhammer away without them). More on the blog.

He looks cool, I love the yellow. The Space lords are a fraction on the short side. Do you think that you could snap a few of them alongside some old and maybe some modern Citadel at some point?

Nothing wrong with avoiding Citadel for a while, but it seems a bit of a draconian pledge. Is that decision motivating you or agitating you? I find getting the balance between painting what I "should" paint and what I want to paint right that second difficult. Its a fine line to navigate.

Thanks Paul! I don't have any modern Citadel to put in comparison, but I'll sort something out for you (and others). While there is a slight shortness to them, they fit very well with Rogue Trader minis as they have the same chunky anatomy.

I think it motivates me. Or at least, it keeps me from agonizing over all the minis I'm not painting. If I really needed or felt like painting something GW, then I would. Now I can focus on painting Spacelords and others without feeling guilty about no finishing my Blood Bowl or Dungeon Bowl teams, or leaving that Harboth's musician unpainted still - not to speak of those sea elves I was going to enter in the LPL once upon a time!

I'll have to leave my ambull, the imperial robots and all the other Rogue Trader goodness for next year. This year I'll have to make do with all the other crap I've amassed! =D

Re: My various 40K and other sci-fi (19/6: Another model, pg

I really dig that Yellow and Brown Color Scheme on the last one! Great stuff.

Re: My various 40K and other sci-fi (19/6: Another model, pg

It is good to see some of the old Metal Magic sculps back in action. They had a really wide range of different models but sadly hard to come by even here in Germany. The only ones you see are the Fantasy range.

Great style a bit like 80s Sci Fi. A bit like Starship troopers. Keep showing more...

Re: Phreedh's various sci-fi (5/10: More models, pg2)

The crew of the Chaste Magpie are reaching playable mass by Pulp Alley standards with this recent addition of clones bred for combat; Karl Wagoner and Jonn'es Cuera.
