Have you applied paints/inks/etc. to 28mm miniatures using sponges? I have some partially painted armoured miniatures from the '90s I might stipple some paint on. Share your preferred sponges & techniques.
Only experimented a few times with small "egg shaped" (but with one end being a point) makeup sponges. I did the blending on the mushrooms on the base in the foreground here https://forum.oldhammer.org/threads/the-age-of-strife.25733/post-124214 by dabbing with the sponge. That's a very fine sponge so more suited I think to blending. I'm not sure I thought it was worth doing over normal blending with brushes to be fair.
I've used torn up packing sponge for stippling on metallic chipping and weathering plenty of times, the trick there always seems to be to get the right quantity of paint on it, so I'd normally be testing on a spare bit of something or other. I just hold the sponges in medical clamps for that which are perfect of the job.
He’s a very skilled painter and usually has a hot take on the latest fads.
Heard it is handy for building up layers and texture on larger flat areas (such as vehicles and marine armour), guess takes some practice to apply correct pressure and amounts.
I picked up a sponge to try it out a while ago, but then get more heavily into fantasy minis where not so appropriate…
