'Oldhammer' Miniatures from Eastern Front soon?

You may have heard this elsewhere, but i am posting here so members of the community not on Facebook get to hear about the surprise news from Mick Leach today. He has secured the services of Tony Ackland and Tim Prow to produce old school miniatures inspired by '80s Citadel. Its very early days. Tony has done 8 concepts which are very Realm of Chaos 80s without stepping on any IP. I have seen them all and they are very exciting to see. Tim Prow is working on the first model as we speak and it should be ready in a couple of weeks. Production is going to be crowdfunded some way, with the success of the first figure being the key to the rest following. The scale is going to be more in keeping with classic miniatures too. With the names on board I cannot see this failing unless we sit there and do nothing. It will cost about $1000 (£500ish?) to get the project up and running and miniatures in your hands if things go well.

Mick has big plans for this that are top secret but I can state that Tim and Tony are not the only ex-GW designers that have been approached to produce concepts and miniatures for this and the names he reeled off read like the inside of a copy of WD circa 1988!

This could turn out to be the Otherworld of Warhammer.

Here's a taster!

The opinion of the Oldhammer Community is important to Mick and he is really keen to hear your feedback!

So what do you think?

Bloody hell, that's amazing news there, Orlygg. Any idea how far away from the kickstarter/indiegogo/etc we are?

Yeah, it's really great that Eastern Front Miniatures have seen the Oldhammer light, and that's some stunning concept work from Tony. Let's hope it's the first of many independent manufacturers to rekindle the flame.

I felt like such a jerk when I saw that because Mick and I gamed in the same circles while in law school and I had no idea he was behind eastern front! Now he'll probably get some sales out of me to help with the guilt ;)

Yes its amazing , count me in for the kickstarter.
To be honest it's not my favorit Chaos Warrior style, too thin for me. I admit, I'm corrupted by the J Goodwin concepts.
But new concepts and shapes of miniature inspired directly from Realm of Chaos sound very good for me and I feel that I will change my criteria of appreciation.

Any way, It's a really good project and I hope it's the beginning of a huge Olschool wave.

Thank you.
Bye Nico.

fantastic news.
I'd be much happier buying this than shelling out for over-inflated minis on ebay.

Any RoC influenced models are welcomed ! Especially if designed by talented artists. Definitely looking forward to what wil lbe foloowing. As Nico, I'm more a Jes Goodwin Chaos Warrior kind of guy but I won't shy away from such deliciously perveted creatures .

One thing is that this takes the wind out of the sails of the Oldhammer community model as it was imagined here. The concept, artists and ideas are actually very close to what was planned.
Having multiple projects is definitely a good sign since it means the community is living and active. What I don't know is if the original concept shown in this forum is still relevant or not.

This is fascinating news and I look forward to seeing what emerges. Also curious to see who the other big names are: unfortunately of course its not likely to be Jes Goodwin or the Perrys :(

This is quite exciting a development.

I can only give my own opinions obviously so here they are.

I have some concerns:

1. Cost will have to be competitive - I tend to want to buy stuff in groups of 5 models as I might plan to make actual battle sized units from them. Single pretty looking miniatures are more suited to painters than generals. A lot of us Oldhammer Merceneries have a pay mistresses and some runtz to worry about.

2. Flexibility in variation is important. The most attractive projects which would get my cash I have seen are from White Knight http://whiteknightminiatureimperium.blogspot.ie/ I draw attention to the excellent design approach to creating multiple variants for the sea elves.

3. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think Tony's work is fantastic, so is Jes's but as some of the guys mentioned they have a preference towards certain styles and there is a lot of stuff competing for our money, with more projects like this one likely to come to fruition in 2014 so I would caution against the optimism of a "if you build it they will come" mentality without good market research - I would love to see this venture succeed in meeting the need of the market so a deep understanding that need is a must.

all good points

I'm a Goodwin chaos fan as well. A lot of my chaos collection is Jes Goodwin, so I would just want something that would be close to fitting in.

Potentially a slight hiccup, but it should detract from a superbly designed, limited edition model ;)

Looks great! Could we make requests? I'd love a metal mini of the horn-helmed warrior on the front of the WFB3 book:

So iconic, yet sadly he was never immortalized in pewter...
