Older Miniatures is a project created by a group of friends who have collected fantasy miniatures for decades. We use high-precision 3D scanning to digitally capture miniatures from our personal collections, primarily models dating from the 1980s and 1990s and originating from manufacturers or ranges that are no longer active.

These scans are only the starting point of our creative process. Each model undergoes extensive restoration, re-sculpting and transformation: we substantially modify poses, equipment, weapons, anatomy, details and other elements to create new interpretations inspired by the aesthetics of classic old-school miniatures.

Our miniatures are therefore not intended as replicas or reproductions of the original models, but as extensively reworked creations inspired by the visual language of the miniatures we grew up with.

We take intellectual property rights seriously. If any copyright or other rights holder believes that one of our creations infringes their rights, we invite them to contact us directly. We will carefully review the model and the relevant rights and, should a legitimate issue arise, we will have no problem removing and replacing the miniature concerned from our collection of nearly 500 models.

yeah, that's just out right bootlegging. just cause you do a weapon swap, doesn't mean you have created a new sculpt.

Do they think I could buy the latest citadel release, swap the weapon, then sell that mass produced? ¬_¬ hell, some of them haven't even been edited.
 
I can't imagine this campaign surviving until the end of the funding period. Surprised GW er al.'s pet lawyers haven't chewed them a new one already. I assume that it has simply flown under the radar so far.
 
remind me of the rubbish a few years back which screwed up things for artists and fans. Basically, alot of companies 'within reason' could turn a blind eye if you, say, drew a picture of Sonic the Hedgehog and sold it as a one-off at an convention or something. Then some 'not nice' people started selling 'prints' such, and the companies had no choice but to step in. Some pretty big time artists even had a problem (one could say this started with Carl Barks but not only did they reach an agreement, it's slightly different). Some can still just about get away with it and it be fine as far use but... it got very messy for a while and yeah..

This kinda thing also starts to make things really bad for homage sculpts, especially 3D ones (though hand too) cause they could say how you scanned there models as a base illegally to get them 'in style'. And things just go down hill from there.. Specially with some of the bigger companies, and ones with partners who are known for legal actions (Disney, with their properties is the famous one).

I'll side-line any talk about 'for home use' cause, I'm not gonna go there ^_^ better men then me have been there. But one the mass production side, its a big no-no. I have some artist friends who are very much aware of the problems such people can cause (side note I won't really go into, but years ago, I did a fan art image... and got a nice little C&D for it cause they didn't want people to think it was official art when it wasn't.. So I had to take it down and never share it again). And of course, anyone remember how comic writer Gary Friedrich screwed over alot of people? Shame when good respected people do such things to harm soo many.
 
I actually think some of these variants are pretty nice though I wouldn't back this campaign on principle. That said, how much worse is this than creating 'not' sculpts based on original figures or artwork? There are some very decent figures like this available from established companies which sell to Oldhammerers. No names, no pack drill, ofc.

The difference is scanning original sculpts and doing minimal conversion work then trying to raise money from fans?

Quite, I've seen a fair few additional HeroQuest miniatures (STLs) that are Orcs with alternate weapons and so forth, all very nice (and typically free). Totally living in the grey lets say in terms of infringement.

Their blurb and the end result don't seem quite to align. I was expecting to see familiar figures in different poses maybe at least. A lot of these do look like minimal weapon swaps and so forth.

I mean I am probably being a little hypocritical I just bought a model that is a copy of a scratch built model presented in a well known IP, the model using parts from another well known IP (and apparently parts cast from originals of that IP). That seller also does a lot of work based off artwork from that IP.

Still feels rather like with the direct scanning and money factor this is really flying close to the sun and the eclipse might not last long enough to avoid them being burned. At least sculpting form art requires more raw skill I guess.
