Old school figures you hated

steders

Serf
I know there is a lot of nostalgia for old school figures from the eighties and I certainly have my favourites BUT
Which ones did you hate and why?
I hated the boarboyz, I had an orc and goblin army and the original artwork for boar riders was fantastic. Huge dangerous creatures! Mean looking orcs!

I couldn't wait!
Then we got these

I was so disappointed, inanimate, dull, pedestrian. I bought them, (I needed them for my army) But far from being a favourite regiment that I feared to lose they became cannon fodder to distract the enemy.
I sold the lot a few years ago, don't regret it at all

Anyone got any hates?

Sorry! I missed that one

I will qualify my post by saying 'Figures that in no way reflected the artwork/fluff and made you curse Citadel for short changing your army'

Or feel free to ignore me

Please carry on

Noone wil lblame you for not knwong all the brazillions of topics here !

Orcs have had their fair share of varied looks and sometimes strange designs. To add to the models that don't relate to what they are on paper, I 'd say fimirs, the variety of scales and the difference between stats and size is one well known example.

We can always use more threads of reasonable criticism and thoughtful analysis, just to show we're not butthurt GW fanboys with rose-tinted specs who think everything was better in the past.

Chaos Juggernauts. WTF is up with that? OMFG it's a joke. Anatomy? Movement? Was it sculpted in playdoh? Bluurgh. Totally broke Chaos. What makes it worse is that GW had used Zoids, they know how amazing mechanical animals can look like, they've done multipart metal kits that work, and this is the best they can do?

I had a Wood Elf army (Scarlocks, Oreons, a bunch of warriors, some treemen). Then they came out with these awful, stiff YMCA poses for the heroes.

Around that time JG was doing a lot of dolly work, check the Wardancers / Bloodbowl Elves / Harlequins. Some are almost the exact same model, with a bit of conversion work, and this just felt like a con, instead of finely sculpted individual characters, with interesting variations, just looked like mass produced toys. Don't get me wrong I like the designs and concepts, but the posing is just atrocious.

Warhammer Regiments boxed set. Who needs detail when you get 6000000 troops for £4.50?

Very true all that, those completely static horse, my oh my... the jugger have to get the palm though...

I think I remember an interview where the sudio got the word from Bryan to make variants to knock up more models in less time, "flat" pose must also be a direct consequences as they were easier to mould. Jes certainly did his fair share of flat poses but he managed to make some wonderfully dynamic poses too (knights of the cleansing flame champion, kneeling eldar scout, ...)

Oh, theres no way those elves or horses are representative of JG scultping abilities, it's just a product of having to ramp up a large number of ranges in a short amount of time, a product of the time, and I hated them then and think they're junk now.

If you look at the slightly earlier AD&D and ME ranges, they were doing the same minor-variation thing, but the variants weren't being marketed as individual figures, and the overall poses are much more characterful, but still part of Bryans multi-master casting plan.

Don't know why the Warhammer Regiments were actually worse than the Drastic Plastic Orc or Psychostyrene Dwarf tho.

Clearly there is something wrong with me because apart from the jugger I love all the examples shown so far. Warhammer regiments rule, indeed just to show you Zhu I'm going to do a battle using just Warhammer Regiments. Yeah that'll show you.

Actually I've replaced almost all the riders for my boar boyz so maybe Steders has something...

What did I hate? If we're sticking to the 80's, very little.

This will ruffle some feathers but I have always loathed the Perry dwarfs. Way too skinny for my tastes. They don't look like dwarfs!

can't argue with any of this. I was actually racing here to post the example ofte jugger but you beat me to it.

Just try to imagine how it walks and it turns not a cartoon.

Still kinda like them though.

Funny thing, taste. I agree entirely that the juggers and elf hero poses are awful, but I rather like the orc boar riders with their expressive faces and bizarre mix of headgear and weapons. In fact, if any of you are getting rid of them at a bargain knock-down price because you don't like the sculpts, do drop me a PM! ;)

I only really think the jugger sucks so far of all the figures shown. All actually like the wood elves on horses and plastic fantasy regiments.

From a man of usually such reliable good taste too!

IIRC. Phreed (who got all my remaining Warhammer Regiments junk off me) has some photos of some of them done nicely somewhere. Can't find them at the moment tho.

Harry also has a very impressive plastic monopose Khorne army mostly built out of the Battle Masters and Heroquest figs (?) viewtopic.php?f=8&t=346

I'm going to start by assuming this excludes Marauder, which already has it's own thread and one foot firmly planted in the New School.

Yeah, they really went backwards on that lot. With the fantastic Skeleton Horde preceeding Warhammer Regiments, it's odd they didnt go with more poses & options. That trend seemed to continue with the WFB 4th plastics, which were complete monopose crap without even a head to swap!

The ROC lesser demons (Bloodletters excluded), beasts, & the new Chaos Warriors in that same release were too cartoony.

Ruglud's box was dissapointing. Not really hate-worthy I suppose, but mediocre compared to some of Kev's other stuff.

A couple of figures spring to mind for me. First off is the LOTR Elrond:

me22elrond.jpg

Now, if you were to think of this figure as just your average D&D type adventurer then fine, it's not so bad. But Elrond? Really?

Next is Aragorn the King (on foot) from the same range:

WTF is he wearing? Super padding all round? Even his shield is padded.

waddling along?

Even ignoring the legs, it's hard to deal with the spaces on its sides cut out for a rider. I own 8 of the modes, so I can be mean.
