My kingdom for a horse!

I'm collecting a 3rd edition Bretonnian army - all my miniatures are metal 3rd edition citadel bretonnians.

My army comprises of:
Mounted general, army standard and wizard
Numerous heros and wizards on foot
20 Peasants
20 Foot knights
20 Retainers with bow
20 Retainers with Crossbow
20 Retainers with double handed weapons
20 Brigand spearmen
Organ gun
Breach loading bombard with pervais
Pot du feu (peasant crew)
Swivel gun (peasant crew)
6 Cheval d'honneur
8 Cheval rampants
8 Chasseurs de la mort
6 Mounted retainers with crossbow

...the only things I have not got yet are 3 mounted knight torsos (if anyone has any going spare!) and I CANNOT DECIDE WHAT TO DO FOR HORSES!!!!!!

I would really like to know peoples opinions on what horses to use. My feelings are that I would prefer to use citadel figures but the metal horses are small (as are foundry ones) or the plastics are massive. I have been toying with the idea of Perry Agincourt horses but these are £8.50 for 3 and there are not many barded ones. Front rank look good but as I've said earlier, I'm finding it tough diluting my citadel army. Help!!

The bearded ones that came with the third ed brets are not nearly as massive as the plastic ones that came with modular empire and Bret knights...plus they are barded. Have you tried those?

Btw...we need pics of your army now! I'm also a collector of this range and it sounds like you have some things I've never seen in the flesh!

Cheers,

Blue

I've used front rank for my brets but I've recently seen these ones mounted on gripping beast nags

Hi whiskey priest,

Thanks for the heads up on the gripping beast horses, i have purchased crossbows from there before and they were really good quality. I like the way some of them are barded in half chainmail and half cloth.

As for Blue - thanks for the comments, I am in two minds about the older plastics as although the scale is a little better, they are really boring, but a nifty paint job may fix that?

I have not painted much of the army yet but here are a few piccys:

Those Bretonnians are great, WARHAMSTER. I'm looking forward to seeing the army growing. I've always been a fan of horde armies, so Bretonnians with 120 of such characterful infantry backed up by artillery and a handful of knights are right up my street. The contrast of proud and clean heraldry against the levy rabble captures the spirit of the army perfectly, excellent choice of colours and painting styles.

Thanks for all the positive comments guys,

...as for the shields, I don't tend to use decals as I don't like the texture they add around the edge of the decal so all of my shields are freehand, although I don't mind using them as the basis for a design on a banner. I will post more comments/pics as I paint stuff or move it to the showcase section (I have an undead, nurgle and an orc army on the go as well!).

I mentioned at the start of the thread that I needed some bretonnian knight 3rd ed torsos or whole knights if possible - does anyone out there have any for sale/trade?

So much goodness in those pics!!! Loverly units all around. You have really inspired me to collect a levy unit ...something I've been avoiding. Are those all citadel figures in the levy unit?

I agree that the GB horses do look nice and I may have to look at those myself.

Regards,

Blue

Let me look in my stash to see if I have any spare knights at the moment. Are you only interested in the modular ones?

Also...with the Gripping beast horses...am I missing the page that just sells the horses? Their web site is quite shite I must say...

Any help appreciated.

Drop them an email, they're lovely blokes.

Will do...Hey WP have you posted up pics of yours on Front Rank horses? those look quite nice as well....decisions like this are hard!?!? But I certainly like the idea of a one piece metal horse over trying to pretty up a plastic one.

Regards,

Chris

A scale shot of Gripping beast horses, with Front Rank horse and couple of Citadel horses would be ideal. Anyone aware of such a picture anywhere?

cheers,

Blue

thanks WP...that is a huge help. the price is decent too.

@WARHAMSTER...I believe these are the Front Rank ones...but I agree that they look superb.

FYI I did get a response from Gripping Beast (very quickly I might add) and they are willing to sell the horses separately from the riders for 2.50pound each...so no much more than the FR ones.

Chris

I've been having a butchers at both websites - I think I prefer the front rank ones as the heads ate a little better and there is a bit more meat on the legs - ill order some over the weekend I think so watch this space!
