Another good museum is the National Maritime at Greenwich. Fantastic ship models like these

plus great exhibitions. When I went they had Nelson's actual jacket from Trafalgar, complete with bullet hole.

My point was that in large cities, public transportation is widely available and you don't need a car. So rent a car from a place on the outskirts of the city and take public transportation there when you're ready to head out. That way you get the benefit of having a car without having to drive in a giant, foreign city.
