Marienburg, Undeadish, etc! (plague)

Re: Marienburg, Undeadish, etc! (Old World Army Challenge)

Lovely elves! Really looks like elves who mean buisness.

Re: Marienburg, Undeadish, etc! (Trolls!)

Thanks! I like that the hero seems understated, yet very leader-like.

More recently: Trolls! I'm too lazy for even too much cutting and pasting. See the blog: https://www.zerotwentythree.com/2019/03 ... rolls.html for more info & pics.

Lush trolls. Vibrant and 'naturalistic' at the same time. Such glorious skin tones.

Re: Marienburg, Undeadish, etc! (Trolls!)

Great work on these trolls, I agree they are some of the best made and your painting has really done them justice.

Re: Marienburg, Undeadish, etc! (Trolls!)

You have some skill there :) Nice looking trolls, great paint job. Also like the bases, they are looking great but still simple and not takeing attention out of model itself.
Great job! :)

Re: Marienburg, Undeadish, etc! (Trolls!)

Your trolls look lovely and dangerous. :) As was said before, the skin tones are fabulous. And they're very expressive models, so the color really brings that to the table. Lovely!

Re: Marienburg, Undeadish, etc! (Trolls!)

Thank you, all. I'm a fan of John Bauer's troll illustrations. My painting may be a little more vivid, but I definitely was inspired by both his color palette and techniques of translucent colors (I used a lot of washes & glazes).

As for the bases, thank you also. After the photos, though, I realized I should add a few small mushrooms to keep them in character. :)

Re: Marienburg, Undeadish, etc! (Trolls!)

Been working on these three figures since the tail end of Deadcember. Snail's pace given that they're a speed-painting dream, but they're finally done.

My Deadcemnber '19 dream is to get a bunch more old '80s lead skeletons to paint. I have a few more, but not many.

Re: Marienburg, Undeadish, etc! (Trolls!)

Oh, well done! Lovely skeletons. I love the brown tones you've worked in throughout. The rusty weapons look great. One really stupid question . . .

Is the shield on the center fellow still waiting to be painted? It looks a little on the clean side. And the plain black side.

*ducks*

Anyway . . . truly lovely stuff!

Re: Marienburg, Undeadish, etc! (Trolls!)

Loving your work on the undead. Having just recently caught the undead bug myself, I have to agree they are a joy to paint. I love your limited colour scheme really makes them stand out and the rust effect looks great.

Re: Marienburg, Undeadish, etc! (Trolls!)

Thanks!

No, shields are remaining plain black for several reasons. One is the idea that the mindless undead have little use for heraldry & decoration. Another is to work with a limited pallette to contrast with their opponents, my Marienburgers, who have a gaudy & colorful landsknecht look. I wanted the undead/undeadish to be more or less greyscale, other than the warm tones of the bones on the skeletons and the rust on the equipment.

Re: Marienburg, Undeadish, etc! (Trolls!)

The shield’s very interesting.

If I tried to pull that off, it would look unfinished. You have achieved what you intended while completely avoiding that risk.

Re: Marienburg, Undeadish, etc! (Trolls!)

Thanks. I think what saves the plain black shields is the exaggerated gradient/highlight. It's still "black" but adds at least something else going on visually. Some previously painted skeletons as an example of them in a group:

Re: Marienburg, Undeadish, etc! (Trolls!)

Okay. That is interesting. The banner really helps to sell it. Maybe their shields have some dark properties that suck the life out of opponents to help animate the skellies, thus freeing up the necromancer to do more . . . interesting things. I'm sold! Took a sec, but I think I can really love this.

Re: Marienburg, Undeadish, etc! (Trolls!)

I imagine the skellies being part of a movie in the style of the animated LoTR-movie by Bakshi from 1978. Then I imagine the black shields and banners being "transparent" in a way that make you see some other strange world behind it - as if the black parts were cut out of the frames and an other background picture was placed behind them. (I hope my description makes sense, even though I don't think I'm able to express it fully in English :) )

Oh, and by the way, nice skellies, trolls and sea elves - they are all great looking and inspiring to look at.

Re: Marienburg, Undeadish, etc! (Trolls!)

Thank you!

I've been neglecting the forums lately. Work got extremely busy, I've had to travel a lot the past two months, and I've had a lot of overtime, late nights, etc. I'm hoping things return to normal soon.

I've (barely) managed to keep up with the Old World Army Challenge, and finished my final entry -- for June.

More words and photos at the site: https://oldworldarmychallenge.blogspot. ... 6-pts.html

I'll be posting a fully army shot & OWAC wrap-up soon. I think I missed sharing my last entry -- it's also on the OWAC, as are a lot of other great oldschool WFB armies.

For a change of pace, I'm thinking about painting an old dragon. I stripped some of my old ones a while ago. Here's my available options:

Re: Marienburg, Undeadish, etc! (OWAC Sea Elves)

Lovely work as ever. Always a treat to see a painted attack chariot. Look forward to seeing a dragon or two.

Re: Marienburg, Undeadish, etc! (OWAC Sea Elves)

Fantastic beasts. See previous item. I had intended to use it for my old Skaven army The latter are easily left off.I could just leave his on, as above

Re: Marienburg, Undeadish, etc! (OWAC Sea Elves)

Been a little while for a follow up. I finished the Old World Army Challenge, as did many others. A lot of good wrap-up posts with final project photos at https://oldworldarmychallenge.blogspot.com/

More recently I just painted the first 10 of 25 half-orcs for Orctober!

I rearranged a bit in the corner of the basement where I paint and photograph. I moved a really bright suspended LED fixture that I recently installed across the room and swapped it with the one near my photo table. Also put it in a slightly better position. This one is brighter and a warmer color.

I had recently draped a sheet of greenish "teddy bear fur” that I won a few years ago over the storage boxes on the ledge behind the table. But as the weather is getting colder, I'm concerned that we will get mice moving into the basement (as has happened the past few years) and I was worried that I was creating a nice nesting spot for them. So the fur backdrop is now suspended from a bit of PVC pipe that is in turn suspended from a water pipe. On my to do list is making some larger trees for the background (and possible future gaming).

I unpacked the Undeadish (or at least most of what's painted so far) for some test photos to see how the lighting would work. These are a mix of oldhammer, nearly-hammer, and not-really-hammer-but-still-fit-the look.)
