Marienburg, Undeadish, etc! (plague)

Re: Marienburg vs. the Undeadish (and more!)

Great work as usual, Thomas. I love the rust effect on the armor of the mantis skeletons and skeleton guard, in particular. Would love the recipe for that if you have some time ...

Re: Marienburg vs. the Undeadish (and more!)

Conveniently, I had a previous request for that, so I've already got a pic.

I just do a base coat of metal (over black base), Nuln Oil wash, then I use an old brush to stipple and/or "mash" irregular splotches of orange in several layers, dark to light. After that, I lightly add some bright silver highlights along some edges and other places where I imagine the rust may have scraped off or not formed from regular use.

Re: Marienburg vs. the Undeadish (and more!)

thanks! I've been using a similar method with a couple of the technical paints. Ryza rust is quite nice for stippling since it has such a high pigment content, although it comes at a cost premium since it's a GW paint. I'll try some of the craft store acrylics as you recommended

Re: Marienburg vs. the Undeadish (and more!)

I am really impressed with how the big bald giant turned out. His skin looks very naturalistic. Oh, and his base is a little piece of art in its own right. Great idea with that little stream, which emphasises how big he is and how he just doesn't care about that sort of obstacles :)

Re: Marienburg vs. the Undeadish (and more!)

Full scale life has been busy, so 25mm scale life has been taking a back seat. But I'm trying to work on stuff when time & space (& spacetime) permit.

I'm also starting to prep some reference materials for the Oldhammer USA Weekend. (Some of it still in-progress....)

Re: Marienburg vs. the Undeadish (and more!)

Brilliant work all around ZeroTwentyThree. And it's really nice to see I'm not the only guy using craft paint for at least some of his stuff.

Re: Marienburg vs. the Undeadish (and more!)

One last update before Oldhammer USA Day. Here's the 1500 pts. of Empire I'm bringing. Maybe pushing the limits of purists' sense of "Oldhammer" as a lot of it is from that transition period of late 3rd and into 4th ed., and... gasp! :o some of it plastic! ;)

(EDIT: In fact, a few 6th ed. figures slipped in there too....)

For whatever reason, I never had any halberdiers painted up, so I hit my stash of the Perry plastics, borrowed some previously painted command figures and I managed two small units of Helbltzen.

Also finished off one last, quickly painted hobbit scout I wanted to include.

And some small revisions to my army list. (Still need to write up a few of the little fluff bits.)

Re: Marienburg vs. the Undeadish (and more!)

I just went back through this whole thread having only seen bits of it previously. Damn, that's a glorious collection of models! I love the strong colour schemes, bright and dark alike. A stunning display. It's motivating me to get on with my undead whilst simultaneously making me want to pack up my paintbrushes. :)

Re: Marienburg vs. the Undeadish -- and more! (Skrolk)

A few of us on the Oldhammer in the New World FB group did a surprise figure exchange. I painted & sent someone Lord Skrolk.

Re: Marienburg vs. the Undeadish -- and more! (Skrolk)

I've always love this figure and your paintjob is stuning!

Re: Marienburg vs. the Undeadish -- and more! (Early Deadcem

Thanks! I really like that Skrolk figure and enjoyed painting him again!

I couldn't wait and started early on Deadcember. Started at about 11:50pm last night -- Black Friday. Dead Friday?

Just base coat and initial washes on some bones.

Re: Marienburg, Undeadish, etc! (Big Skeletons)

It's officially Deadcember, and I've officially finished the first of the (un)dead for the season.

Skeletal demon and giant from Ral Partha. (Handgunner for scale.)

Skeletal ogres from (left to right): Ral Partha Europe, Justin from the Oldhammer FB group, Ral Partha Europe, and Krakon Games.

Time is getting a little tighter for me, so I cut a few corners but I still think they all look pretty good!

Re: Marienburg, Undeadish, etc! (Deadcember!)

Next up for Deadcember's paint-a-thon (December is shaping up to involve more painting than the entire rest of the year at this pace) is a group of five skeletons that I believe are old Citadel. I'm not sure, I got them as part of a trade. They are bigger than the Nightmare Legion, but they will probably end up as filling in odd units either in the Legion or elsewhere, as needed. They're really nice sculpts, I wish I had more that were similar to this. I've had no luck in finding old metal skeletons, though -- other than these, obviously. Shields are Empire heaters with the tiny hole filled in & sanded smooth.

Re: Marienburg, Undeadish, etc! (Deadcember!)

Rapid work on two more figures for Deadcember. And more cheating. ;)

One is a wight that I got in a trade. It was painted very close to my own style, so I just kept the paint, gave him a new shield and base. I think it's another old Citadel figure.

The other is the third of my vulture sculpts. Finally painted after working on the sculpting for many long years, and then the figure has been primed and sitting on my desk since earlier this year. (I got frustrated with his staff and stole the top and bottom from the GW Mordheim sprue.) Going with the limited pallette of the Undeadish again -- but I probably still could have done a little better. Worked on it in little five minute increments, whenever I could get to it, over the past few days. I should get a photo of the three sculpts together.
