KS - Heavy Metal Hordes- Intrepid Infantry

Since we're had a lot of chatters bout digital sculpting I noticed a good old analogue KS just now.
Heavy Metal Hordes is a collaboration between vintage miniatures enthusiast Gary Westwell and Sculptor/Illustrator Aaron Howdle. Frustrated by the lack of variety in certain out of production ranges, Gary reached out in an Oldhammer Facebook group for suggestions. Aaron answered the call, and the two discussed how Aaron could provide Gary with the wood elf army of his dreams. And while he was at it, what about some proper scary old school orcs, sea elves maybe, and wasn’t it a shame that nobody really made more than a handful of chaos goblins? Come to think of it, maybe there were other gamers and collectors of a certain age who felt the same way? After all, he was always taught to share his toys!

The existing sculpts look quite nice, so I thought there might be some interest here.

I would debate some of the "lack of variety in certain out of production ranges" with some of what they are doing but they are good enough sculpts ^_^

Although it’s not my preferred genre so won’t have a need, it’s nice to see old school style sculpts of tank and file indeed

Some interesting stuff there. Is £6 for a rank & file figure without a shield a bit optimistic though?

I think we as a society have become used to things being from cheap overseas labour.
Combine that expectation with the fact so many wargames companies owners have regular jobs which means their wargames business does not need to provide the owners with a living and as such they can charge less than those that do...

It seems not unreasonable.
However I suspect a fiver would be my general cut off for rank and file.

I would... debate that a bit.. there is a fair bit of that, but if you have ever visited the toy section or a toy store, alot of the stuff is main overseas by cheap labour, has what I would call iffy quality control, yet the price is far higher then then the stuff was made 'in house' (so to speak)... it's.. interesting mix. But I do find some companies, especially some in the USA for the last few years, love to put a 'MADE in the USA' as a sign that you SHOULD be proud to pay more (even if the product isn't really made in the USA).. though Being English, I don't really go in for this side of things, and you don't see many 'MADE IN BRITIAN' stamps anymore...

but don't wanna side track, I do agree many small war game companies do have it as a side-line, and thus expect to pay a bit more. But isn't KS still a way to get a product to market (sometimes exclusive on the KS) and kinda gonna be cheaper then when they have it into production? like you KS to get a new figure range, and when they are in your own shop, they would be the £6 a piece, but for KS, £5 or something? not a 100% sure thing but.. yeah.. anyway.. I'll have to leave it at that here ^_^

FWIW, their website has the KS1 command packs at £27 whereas they're £25 as an add-on in their current kickstarter (KS2). I assume a premium will apply to the KS2 rank & file when they hit the web store too.

While I like the concept and some of the figures, I think they're pitching it too high for figures of this quality for army builders. By way of example, a beastman regiment of 12 figures plus four command and a pack of six shields would be £103 plus P&P. I might swing for it for the more unusual stuff, e.g. chaos goblins, but there's no chance for common or garden types like human halberdiers or wood elf archers.

In closing, I note that nine champions of misrule with six shields would be £30 in Satanic Panic's current Kickstarter.

Ideal if you want a unit of chaos warriors doing the YMCA...

Whilst you might expect KS to be cheaper as an incentive, because you lose 10% of your takings it makes sense it would actually be more expensive on a crowd funder.
