Knights of Khorne

I’d just started painting this unit when the news about John Blanche broke, and so I put some extra effort into the skull-faced Lord’s (ready-sculpted) shield. Then the idea popped into my head to try and copy one of his paintings onto a blank shield, as a little mini-tribute and to push my painting boundaries; so I chose his Bloodletter painting for the bat-wing helmeted leader. From there it sort of spiralled; it made sense to do a Bloodthirster, Flesh Hound and Juggernaut, then a not-so-run-of-the-mill symbol of Khorne, and a couple of shields covered in skulls to round things off. I took the same approach to the daemon-faced chest of one of the knights (probably my favourite job overall of these). Finally I chose to do my first-ever foil banner (a tomato puree tube, so even that was red…), and bought some hobby chain to hang it with.

I thoroughly enjoyed doing them, and am pleased with what ended up being an effort at a tribute unit way beyond my normal comfort zone. My technique’s very rough, but three feet away from above and all that!

Lovely miniatures. lovely paintjob. That skull helmet guy served as my general for about two decades. I never figured out what name to give him so he was just called the High Lord of Khorne. So far undefeated with his 10 attacks (frenzy), with an Axe of Khorne, regeneration and the shield that nullifies enemy magic items

10 attacks?!? That’s crazy!
You really could buff the heroes to silly degrees in some editions. 😂

I did some rough calculations a while back and worked out that in 5E this unit (Lord plus 7 knights) would weigh in at almost 1,000pts all by itself, and I’m not sure if that included magic items and Chaos Rewards.

I vaguely remember using the bargain priced Hail magic missile (25 points) for 3d6 hits and the even more bargain priced Freeze (50 points) magic weapon, damages on a 2, no armour save allowed back in WFB 3rd edition.

3rd edition could be very easily abused, its main saving grace with over powered heroes is that you can only attack models in base to base, so best case scenario, even with loads attacks you can only kill 2 regular rank and file. That is assuming you place your hero in the midle of 2 bases:

Hail of doom arrow (Woodies only). I remember offing a Slann mage priest with it back in the 5th edition days. It was turn one on the first outing of my mate's freshly-painted lizardman army. Most of his army then ran away after failing their rout tests. Happy days 😊

I mostly used mine for duffing up enemy characters or monstrous creatures.
