I'll be posting my Oldhammer Bretonnians here as I acquire, build, and paint them. My force is a mix of 3rd ED and 5th ED models from Citadel and maybe some other proxies.


First, the postman brought me some eBay 3rd_edition-WFB_Fighters.1.1.jpgtreasures today: 3 "Fighter" blisters, 2 are the Bretonnian Knights with Handweapon, Mace from 1990, and the last is as shown a Chevalier D'Honneur" from 1989. I'm going to paint them all, I love the 3rd Edition knights and will have a regiment of them.

The weather has been against me for spray priming so I've been prepping lots of minis. Hopefully I'll get a day to spray them and then spend the time painting.
 
Can't wait to see how the army progresses. I loved those Bretonnian editions and always wanted to make one for 3rd and, although I made a start, my inability to get hold of the mounted knights (and total lack of focus) meant it stalled. I hope you didn't have to do anything too illegal to get those knights in blisters! My recollection, even a fair few years back, was that obtaining them involved blood sacrifices and your first born. Which I thought was a pretty good deal but no one else in the house did!

The knights in-blister were not crazy-high, perhaps because of the condition of the card backs. I've had some good luck with finding 3rd Edition Bretonnian knights, it may just be that everyone is buying metal Empire and Chaos Dwarf minis right now or something. Metal 4th Edition Empire Battle Wizards, for example, are going for almost twice what I've been spending on Bretonnians.
 
Repanse's metal horse just arrived in the mail. It's in excellent condition, I want to polish the casting a little but I'm happy to have this.

Repanse de Lyoness herself is supposed to be here by Tuesday. I won't have her metal shield but to me that's minor, I'll just paint a substitute.
 
OK, so not to like polish and then display as a shiny trophy?
I mean if it is then fair enough.

But to clean and then paint?
I mean if not then fair enough.

I have never heard anyone talk of polishing their models is all.

Oh, yes, just more a clean-and-prep of the casting before prime-and-paint. Sorry for any confusion.
 
Alot of the old Painting guides say about Polishing the figures first. Never did it myself (though they often say to use a drill polish brush thing (the wire brass brush).. I can't remember which GW painting I'm thinking of which shows them being used to polish up a metal mini before painting... I was always worried it might damage the fine detail on the figures myself..
 
I do it by hand, sometimes with a linen cloth, sometimes with an old toothbrush and a little hobbyist polishing compound. There were a couple of old minis I used a brass wire brush on because there was visible corrosion but it's a risk to detail.
 
Sorry to derail but no sooner did I post that but I remembered:

Citadel Journal #1 - "Painting with Oils" by Simon Cass. A guy who names.. erm.. doesn't ring any bells with me and the article is interesting saying how most people (including the Citadel Staff) would say Oils are bad for painting minis, but Cass says they can be good but not as easy.
That art is by.. erm.. well.. take your pick: Tony Ackland, David Andrews, John Blanche, Joanne Podoski or Rick Priestley... wait.. Rick Priestley on Art Duty?
