Kitbashing...random bits.

A random thought for the day.

Is it me or do others pick up bits of random (often to be rcylced) plastic and think 🤔 hmm that's a radar or something?! Bits that could be incorporated into a proper old school kitbashed vehicle or something. And not bitz from official sprues, spare arms, etc. We are talking modern everday (often 'throw away' ) items from the home repurposed.

Overactive imagination or borderline/problematic kleptomania? I have a box full of 'interesting' bits - from broken lego pieces to old circuitary to a busted plug chain. Stuff sometimes just ends up in scenery pieces, glued, sprayed, and painted as rubble; blasted or ruined parts for cover.

Anyhow, two things that popped out to me this morning when doing the recycling ♻️. The press from an aerosol cap (radar or sensor scope?) and the label tag off spring onions (gunnery protection / armoured plate). I see things... :D

It's the hoarding gene common in some gamers. Those who have it need to beware that they don't end up barricaded in their lairs with boxes of 'come in useful one day' bits, stacks of old newspapers & bottles of piss. Don't be one of those guys.

I do wonder what future archeologists (if we survive as a species!) will make of all this in the anthropecene stratified layer. Especially when they find a random chaos mini perfectly preserved. Or are we all, like our plastic sprues and bitz boxes, to be rendered, squashed and super-heated to become another geological layer?! 😂

Oh yeah, that’s me. Boxes and boxes of the stuff, to the point that I have it broken down and labeled: “tubes” here, “discs” there, “flat plastic” over there.

Every six months or so I do a hobby room clean-up, and 90% of it gets tossed.

That glazed look my wife has come to anticipate when I’m staring too long at some food packaging at the grocery store… “scratchbuilder’s eye” I call it.

Well due to all the lead miniatures the petrol they make out of us should run really smoothly at least ...

God did I collect bits and pieces when younger. Endless boxes of interesting bits of packing and tubes and offcuts and bits out of broken toys and whatnot. I am a little more restrained now, but still interesting little bits get put to one side - I'm just better than I was. Although I did pop these three water aerators (or filters?) (optimistically doing some water butts and these were various tap options) into a box of oddments just the other day thinking they looked like potential engine intakes/exhausts or something. Although they are glossy plastic so would be a pain.

So I'm not fully cured.

To be honest I love seeing bits and pieces on terrain, whilst I find the rise of 3D printing fascinating of itself I miss the tactile nature of scratch building, both doing it and seeing it done.

This is great. Glad that I started this. And obviously setting in motion the inaugural online meet of Kitbashing Anonymous. So, let's get started. "My names Fighelm, and I've been collecting junk really good stuff for kitbash modelling for the neck end of forty years..." ✨

[Fnar Fnar] Context is everything I guess. What about the sensibilities of the shop staff? So.... Obviously, some 'ground rules' (engagement & social boundaries) are required here at this very first meeting of 'Kitbashing Anonymous' (incorporating 'Scratchbuild self helpers'). And do please keep it in yer sporran Master Stockin. :D

Nah. Leather Satchel Bag thingy. Much for space for stuff.
 
To the deranged mind of the modeller the world takes on a strange and different appearance, pieces of polystyrene packaging become buildings and bunkers, dessert and margarine tubs are components for towers, tins and cardboard tubes assume the proportions of mighty buildings.

Rick Priestly in Rogue Trader. There's a small section titled The Hoarding Impulse.

I turned the plastic covers from the angled blister packs into sunken pillboxes with a square loophole cut out of the flat bit at the bottom. This was painted with some suggestion of a hatch on the angled bit if I recall correctly.
