Kasper's Omnia Oddities (updated: Citadel Minotaur

Hello all,
Thought I might create a topic to dump some pictures of the Oldhammer-related minis I manage to finish. I do not have a lot of painting time and having to paint a bazzilion zombies for Zombicide means there isn't a lot of old stuff getting painted. But I do find that painting an old 'friend' once in a while is great for keeping the creative juices flowing and maintaining an interest in painting.
As always there are more pictures and text for each on my blog, the link for which is in my signature.

So here is Arkward, a slightly confused Minotaur (MM42 Minotaur C, sculpted by Aly and Trish Morrison - anyone know if they actually worked together on each mini with one doing the head and the other the body?).

IMG_0251.JPG

He has, for still undisclosed reasons decided to follow Slaanesh - but there are rumours he was promised drugs that would make him larger - as large as his hero, Doomroar.

IMG_0254.JPG

The next is Melty, a former scholar who dabbled too much in alchemy attempting to dissolve gold. Unfortunately. due to the interest of the Chaos Gods, he only succeeded in melting himself and is now cursed with a bad temper, melting skin and an increased sense of smell whereby he can sense the completeness of his body odours. His 'beneficiary' was Nurgle and he has thus joined Arkward in service of Slaanesh to get some type of revenge.

IMG_0209.JPG

He is an old (1983) TSR Troll (B 5305) and perhaps the roughest sculpt I've ever painted. And the chap with the largest nose ever.

IMG_0211.JPG

The last is Bum Fuzzle, a powerful Orc who for some reason has found himself in the service of Slaanesh. He has not fully understood the differentiated nature of the gods but was told that a service to them would provide amble opportunity for slaughter.

IMG_0202.JPG

He is still waiting for the promised experience of a throne of skulls and rivers of blood and somewhat confused about why he needs to don purple armour but due to his fickle memory he keeps forgetting to seek employment elsewhere. Oh, and he also wishes he had a boar to ride into battle on - perhaps Slaanesh, amused by the confused orc's thought, might at some time bless him with a mighty steed.

IMG_0205.JPG

Anyways, that is the warband for now - a group of confused followers who all contributes to keeping the young god amused - he might even send them a leader to lead them to glory, but who knows what plans Slaanesh has in store for these unlikely band of 'brothers'. Stay tuned...

Re: Kasper's Omnia Oddities

Nice minis. Cool old stuff. I like your fluff too. Very funny and the lightning strike background just makes it look so dramatic.

Re: Kasper's Omnia Oddities

Great minis and I really like your backgrounds.

Why a round base on the mino and square on the other two chaps?

Re: Kasper's Omnia Oddities

Thanks, chaps!

MetroidHatchling - with regards to the fluff, then it helps to paint as slowly as I do - gives you plenty of time to consider why a particular figure might have chosen the 'wrong path'. It also helps that these old minis have so much character, difficult not to try and 'interpret' the mini :).

Phreedh - the minotaur is on a round base primarily because that was what happened to be at hand, but I do find them to be less obtrusive and I might re-base the troll and orc on round bases as well. I tend to like my bases to be as simple as possible.

All the best,
Kasper

Re: Kasper's Omnia Oddities

As said above, both paintjjobs and background stories are really nice. Really enjoying those, the backdrops also have a retro charm which is splendid. Hope to see more of it.

Special mention for the orc who doesn't really know about what he's doing here ;)

Re: Kasper's Omnia Oddities

I think these all look very nice and I agree about the dramatic backdrops...nice touch!

I would hazard to guess that you are using regular light bulbs for your photos though....which is why everything has a fairly "yellowish" cast to it. I would really recommend a couple of daylight compact florescent so that we can admire your paint jobs even more....they will give you a much better color balance in your photos.

Keep up the good work!

Cheers,

Blue

Thanks Blue - and yes, I struggle with two cheap lamps and the results show this. I've bought a cheap "photo-studio" through a Kickstarter which should arrive shortly and hope this may alleviate the problem, but if not, then I'll have to find some daylight bulbs.
All the best,
Kasper

Re: Kasper's Omnia Oddities

Howdy chaps!

Thanks, CVB. The backgrounds were fun to find and do give the figure a certain sense of Sitz im Leben, I think.

As Blue mentions, the pictures suffer from the set-up I have had available (mainly cheap lamps). I was thus pleased to find a Kickstarter for what looked like an affordable Photo-box / Light-box running on LEDs. It arrived this morning and I've been busy tinkering and tweaking it. Here is a before and after shot of Arkward:

Before+and+after.jpg

I do think the after-shot, using the FOLDIO photo box, is better - may not attract as much attention but shows the mini's paint job much more true to reality (also, who chipped the nose of Arkward?!? I'll kill those kids :)). Unfortunately the LED supplied is not sufficient, and even with another (a cheap one from Ikea) it is too dark. But I think the set-up is still usable and with better light will be almost perfect.

I've written a longer review of the Foldio thingy here http://warmasterdk.blogspot.dk/2014/03/new-photo-studio-foldio-review.html, and will terminate this post with a few extra pictures of Arkward, using the new set-up.
I would really appreciate comments as to whether I'm just imagining that these pictures are better than those in the previous posts!

Re: Kasper's Omnia Oddities

Thanks, guys - and I fully concur :).

But what is a post without pictures? Boring, that is what so here are some pictures of a still confused Orc general, but now a much more happy goblinoid:

IMG_0579.JPG

So why is he as happy as a grumpy, old and cranky warlord can be? Because Slaanesh has heard his grumbled wishes for a mount and brought him this beast:

IMG_0575.JPG

The two were brought together in a chance meeting in the woods. Our orc's first thoughts were along the lines of how much wargear he could buy with the huge teeth on the Sabretooth. But the beasts vicious growlings made him pause and a slow sense of respect - something entirely new for the orc - grew. The two are now inseparable, hunting the wilderness killing and maiming everything they find, be it animals or sentient beings. Never before has the Orc been so close to happiness and his confusion has been momentarily forgotten. But Slaanesh is a fickle being and grows tired of the pleasure gained through the orc's rampaging so life will probably bring new challenges for the warlord, and soon.

But until then just look how happy the two are:

IMG_0581.JPG

The beast is the Sabretooth from the Celtos set called "". I bought it cheaply on Ebay, without the huntress unfortunately, as I knew it would be a suitable mount for the orc.

More pictures of the growing warband - which is becoming quite beastial in nature - on the blog below and more to come next week which has been declared international Heroquest-week as I've rephotographed all my Heroquest minis with the new set-up and will be reblogging them :).

All the best,
Kasper

Re: Kasper's Omnia Oddities

Hi People,
Some updated pictures of Melty, the Nurgle Troll, using the Foldio-gizmo:

I still find the Foldio setup to lack a bit of light, but I do think the pictures are much improved.
At the moment I'm painting a small group of ancient goblins that I fell in love with while scanning the darkest corners of Ebay - should be finished soonish :).

All the best,
Kasper

Re: Kasper's Omnia Oddities (updated: Goblin Raiding Party)

I (almost on purpose) bought a handful of delightful Goblins. They turned out to be part of the old Citadel Speciality Set 4 - better known as the Goblin Raiding Party.
So far I've got pictures of Urag Legeater and Torg Dwarfsmasher ready:

(More pictures at http://warmasterdk.blogspot.dk/2014/04/urag-legeater-citadel-speciality-set-4.html and http://warmasterdk.blogspot.dk/2014/04/torg-dwarfsmasher-citadel-speciality.html)

I must admit that painting these chaps was an immense pleasure and it was fun to paint goblins again - been a long time. And those names! They really add character and life to the minis.
The last gobbos will be uploaded shortly. Now I just need to get my hands on the rest of the raiding party - another thing to collect :).

Anyways, all the best
Kasper

Re: Kasper's Omnia Oddities (updated: Runequest Dragonnewts)

Hello all,

Along with the old Runequest Dragonnewts (above), I also got some fun looking Scorpion men. I initially bought them because I thought they were variants of the old "Runequest Box 4: Beast Men - Scorpion Man with Club".

Unfortunately, they were not and are two pretty crappy conversions, or rather destructions of the originals - the clubs ares gone, shields have been inexpertly added, and bothhave received (even more inexpertly) a new beastman head.

IMG_0763.JPG

I've been working on them with green stuff to hide most of the old conversion and have added a little something special to them to make them more Slaaneshi - I think they have, under the circumstances, turned out just fine :):

IMG_0758.JPG

Mr. Scorpion Man #1

The distinct claws were bought - after much searching - from an online bitz-shop.

IMG_0761.JPG

Mr. Scorpion Man #2

The purple should tie them in with the Slaaneshi warband nicely, but I guess that the browns could have used a bit more variation.

The beastman head used for Mr. Scorpion Man #2 (below) may have been a skeletal head originally - not sure. If anyone can identify where these heads originate I would appreciate the information.

Considering the circumstances I think they look effective, and - if you don't look too closely - they look nice :).

Re: Kasper's Omnia Oddities (updated: Runequest Scorpion Men

Great looking scorpion men, Kasper! Very nice job!

Re: Kasper's Omnia Oddities (updated: Runequest Scorpion Men

Thanks, Phreed. Once I got over the disappointment they were quite fun to splash some paint on. They do look quite vicious, especially next to the docile minotaur :).

Re: Kasper's Omnia Oddities (updated: Runequest Scorpion Men

They look great. Excellent salvage job. This is such a fun thread, it's inspired me to work on some of my old chaos stuff on the side.
