Just what armies are you collecting or already have?

Willmark

The Dark Lord of Hashut
I’ll post which armies and approximate point values I have in a bit, but I wanted to get a sense of what other folks are doing in the community.

Army(or armies)
Approximate point value
Era? Oldhammer, middle hammer, deep past (aka solid round bases!)

Etc.

I’m also curious because living in the colonies was different than the UK for what we now call Oldhammer. We had a very narrow window of time on this side of the pond where 3rd edition was a thing.

Fortunately where I live made a big difference with a number of games stores back in the day.

I started off just buying models I thought looked "cool", and generally continued to buy quite a few random bits here and there. Everything I have is from 85-97 (maybe 98) so I guess oldhammer to middlehammer. Mostly fantasy but a chunk of futuristic and a couple of Space Marine "epic scale" bits too. I was lucky enough living near Norwich to have a Games Workshop, Langleys (various models and modelling supplies) and a store called the Games Room (lots of Ral Partha). I was mainly limited by pocket money at first, then later more distracted by other pursuits!

I have the included plastic goblin and elf armies that came with Warhammer 4th edition, plus quite a few more metal orc and goblin bits I picked up and a handful of metal elf bits. So at a guess around 500 points high elf and around 750-1000 orc and goblin. These models are all from 88-94 I think.

I have various random chaos bits, fair few metal and plastic space marines (plus plastic marines from Space Crusade), space orks and creatures. Not really sure on the points values but probably getting close to 1000 points of Space Marines, few hundred or so on everything else from the future.

I did fully invest in trying to collect an undead army, and have probably somewhere around 3000 points of undead. These models would range the full time I was buying them.

I've only just built up the nerve to open my boxes and still getting everything in order, so not really picked up very much recently. Keep looking at a few stores, but really should clear my backlog first!

My main 3rd Ed WFB armies are undead (20,000+ points) Dark Elves (5000 points), Slann (3-4000 points) and Chaos Dwarves at around 3,000 pts. I’ve also got a Chaos army that can run to about 3-5000 points of any of the major powers depending on which God. Semi painted armies are Orcs, Dwarves, Araby and Skaven, all at around 3-5,000 points when finished.

RT 40k are Imperial Guard at about 15,000 points, Orks, Marines and Space Slann at 5,000 points and Genestealer Cultists at about 3,000 points.

I’m sure there are more unpainted forces but a lot are boxed up in the attic!

I have a truly silly amount of painted figures, from 1979 to ultra modern, all armies (I think) except Lizardmen, chaos, high elves and dark elves, as well as some home rule armies, like undead pirates and arabyans. Here are 770 of them (a fraction of what I have) in the bat rep I am working on right now ... (BTW: I am not boasting here, but issuing an important warning regarding how much a life can be swallowed by toy soldiers! Do not do as I do!)

I have lots of varied warbands but when it comes to the actual armies I could put down on the table:

Large-ish armies (2000 points plus):
High Elves, including Sea Elves (mostly middlehammer, some oldhammer)
Empire (core is oldhammer, with new sculpts in the old style alongside)

Medium size armies (1000-2000 points):
Nurgle (core is oldhammer with some older than oldhammer and some new sculpts in the old style)
Dolgan raiders (characters are oldhammer, rank and file are middlehammer and new plastic models)
Fimir (mixture of oldhammer and new fimir sculpts in the old style)

Not armies yet but heading that way (getting towards 1000 points):
Dwarfs (entirely oldhammer with rather a lot of preslotta)

Think that's everything...

I’ve given away a lot over the last two years, including around 3,000 Dwarf points and quite a bit more besides.
As a result, things have become a bit more organised.

I own (the points are very rough estimates):
Chaos Dwarves – approx. 20,000 points
Fimir – approx. 2,000 points
Melnibonéans and Dark Elves – approx. 1,000 points
Slaan – approx. 750 points
Empire – approx. 750 points

Edit: I forgot Grenadier Dwarfs made by Nick Lund - approx. 750 points

2nd Edition Warhammer 40,000
Panthers Space Marines: ~7,500 points mostly painted
Craftworld Eldar: ~4,000 points painted, with another 1k-2k still awaiting glue and paint brush.
Harlequins: ~30 harlequins, two shadow seers, two great harlequins, three death jesters (with another one missing - I know it should be around somewhere!) two solitaires, and two dreadnoughts (epic Phantom Titans)
Tyranids: ~ 4,500 points mostly painted. Still have some 'gaunts, 'gants, 'goyles, and tyranid warriors wanting paint and glue. And a 4th lictor.

I started off just buying models I thought looked "cool"
Yep, might be guilty of still doing that!

Back in the day on the Rogue Trader side of things it was Space Marines and Squats (very much just choosing what was cool looking) at first, then Orcs. No idea quite how many points worth any of those were. We then shifted over to Fantasy and did the bulk of the army building really with 4th edition. My own armies were Orcs/Goblins and Undead.

These days since all my old stuff is off with my brother my "re-collecting" has been a bit more varied, but I've not been too strict on sticking to any particular army lists or anything, although the aim is mostly for stuff that can work with WFB 3rd and 4th and still classic Rogue Trader (I never really did move on!).

So painted wise on the fantasy front I've mostly got: Undead, Orcs and Nurgle as viable armies. A decent warbands worth of Chaos Dwarves and Dwarves, some Halflings and then various random bits and pieces. On the 40K side of things it's Space Marines, Squats, Eldar (not painted by me for the most part), and then "awaiting some mythical burst of efficiency" there are boxes of Space Orks, Imperial Guard and a smattering of tanks and titans and whatnot all waiting their turn.

The current aim was to kinda try to finish out the Undead and the Nurgle bits on the fantasy front. On the 40K side I'm trying to get all the classic metal marines done and to try do do all the Squats.

Exclusively 40K across the 1st three editions. Not sure I could dignify any forces I own with the word army. I just bought what I liked the look of & augmented them with proxies & borrowed miniatures to make up the numbers. I've got orks, eldar, space marines of both stripes, tyranids & genestealers.

Aside from the 300 plus models from my dwarf army which I have been sharing on the forum (who knows how many pts they are dependent on editions played?!? It has minis which cover a mix of editions and manufacturers, but particularly focused on collecting the Marauder special unit figures) I have the following:

Large army of RT to 2nd edition space marines
Genestealer cult army/warband RT era
Large warband of RoC era chaos
Army of orcs & goblins 3rd to 4th ed
Small army of Empire mainly 4th ed
Small warband of undead

Attached a few pics to illustrate.

I also have numerous odds and sods from other forces, games and manufacturers that have picked up over the years.

Well all my armies are 3rd edition models but I have non Oldhammer armies as well for other games. I am in the process so cutting back to just a 3000 point list for each army ensuring its painted and selling anything I don't need. Currently - Dwarfs, orcs, chaos, bretonions, dark elves (but they might get sold) and a squat and Ork force for 40k again nothing newer than 1991

Ok cool stuff, I was curious before I posted my own. Once started, I realized had to use a spreadsheet. And once I realized a spread sheet was needed? I have a problem... :)

Section 2 — Allied & Mercenary Contingents

These started as an outgrowth of my numerous armies. I realize GWs intent for Allies and Mercs was for folks to use their (potential) other armies for allies and mercs of another, not dedicated models (for the most part).

Well I may have gotten carried away on the Allies and Mercenaries too.

Section 3 — Other Edition Armies

The high elves were recently split off from the ones noted above. When I started collecting high elves during the 3rd edition days I used to run my high elves in the following manner: 1 general, 1 standard bearer on dragons and four dragonkin riders, easily 3k points. ;)

But not long thereafter it was solidly 5th edition and then it morphed into the massive force listed below. Later when I finished my Wood Elf army, all older school elf minis (aside from the dragons) went to that for the most part leaving me with very few dedicated citadel minis for the high elf force.

The Nippon army? Why do you think I've been trying to get all those ninjas over the years!

@Zanko Isn't 20,000 points worth every single Chaos Dwarf miniature that was ever cast?

Unfortunately not. I’d need to own all the 3rd Edition models from GW (apart from a few variants), but I only have three original BigHat models. They were never quite to my taste. But there are still so many great models out there waiting to be discovered. That’s part of the fun – the hunt!
