Inquisitorial Retinue

Over the past years I've gathered a collection of GW 40k figures that are not of the usual rank and file troop. I've collected them due to their somewhat esoteric (if not un-usable) nature in games, their story/narrative presence in the "world" and with all things being given to the eye of the beholder, their beautiful curiosity to the eye. Some of them were part of a completed WIP and/or a Golden Gobbo event a few years back on the boards. But the group has grown.

They represent a broad spectrum of the imperium from the Adeptus Administratum, Navis Nobilite, the Inquisition, Adeptus Astra Telepathica, Adeptus Ministorum and other sub organisations. Likewise the models broadly range through sets, collections, editions and years, from Rogue Trader circa 1989 all the way up to a couple of modern resins of 2018. So for the latter reason this is not a truly Oldhammer or even "middle hammer" WIP project and little on the edge of what the boards are about in nature. So with the blessings of the emperor and your permissions, I would like to WIP blog them here for your entertainment and curiosity into a large coordinated, cohesive Inquisitorial Retinue culminating in a scenic board for entry into the GW Armies on Parade "competition" (competition in the loosest terms), next year should they run it. Pretty much the same thing I did a few years back with the Rogue Trader Space Marine WIP (now defunct due to the image host). It was great to see the interest and enthusiasm people had on the day for the old models, people even asking where they could get them. So I hope to rinse and repeat somewhat.

So, notwithstanding the above "purer oldhammer" issues and subject to any dislike to the age range/edition of the figures. (I can remove the WIP blog and continue the project else where without a grump, I understand any objection :grin: ) I give you;

Inquisitorial Retinue WIP.

For me, Oldhammer is a mindset, not a certain set of miniatures. :)

looking forward to seeing your progress.

oldhammer is about using whatever figures match your vision, not being stuck with one (proprietal or otherwise) line.

This is what makes you lot such a comfortable and appealing community to frequent!

Nothing too exciting so far, just been sanding down 50 smooth surfaced 28mm bases for them all. I hope to paint them in a marble style to match the floor of the display (yet to be done) and tie them all together as a force.

I've also been removing the tabs and pinning each model. While I hate taking away their "dog tags", I can't airbrush the bases with the slots in them with the models in situ. Likewise I can't fill in the gaps and paint to match. So, they have to go. BUT, each tab has been neatly cut and will be attached under the base to show its pedigree.

Some nice models there mate. I have some but real jealous of the Ordo Malleus daemonhunter in Terminator armour. looking forward to seeing how this project develops.

The idea for the board the models will stand on is a marble floor/walled building interior. Something akin to an imperial holy place. So, the bases of the models will need to match that to to them in. I hate the look of mis-matching bases on a display. I'm a snob I know. I'm also hoping they will set the models off nicely when stood alone on display.

Bases then, marble effect. I take 0 credit for this technique. It's done the rounds on youtube so I thought I'd give it ago. Here's the steps juuuuust in case one of you've not seen it and like the effect.

FIrst step.... 'mmmgggrrrrr-F**K SAKE!' Dropped the 3d printed quad lazcannon for the spartan. Broke it. 'Grrrrrrrr.' Don't do this step, ensure items are fixed to your double sited sticky tape wooden sticks properly.

Prime and spray gold (or any colour you'd like, metallic or not. This layer works best as the "flecks and flakes" in the marble).

Get yourself a packet of baby/disinfectant wipes. Dry them out and then work the weave open. Don't get the flushable, degradable ones. You want the sea life killing, drain clogging plastic threaded ones that stretch and give you the striations.

Stretch it over your "whatever" and spray your striation colour. Then remove the cloth, wet or dry don't matter. Wet makes it streak more, dry gives crisper edges but leaves threads behind. Do this again with a new bit of cloth for your dominant marble colour.

I've found the technique not as fast, easy and clean as everyone seems to show it. The scale of the "marble effect" can be a tricky to manage and it's a bit of a challenge to get it juuuust right. But I don't think it looks too bad for a batch process technique. I can detail them later with a little free hand painting brushing. What do you think?

Time to get back to work through this lot. Almost finished pinning the metal too.

Going top need a new hobo spray booth.

Time has been short of late but we've got a little progress here.

All the metal models are now pinned and ready to undercoat then paint. I've got time off over the xmas hols to settle in and enjoy that. I don't want to rush them through to "get them done" but enjoy the process.

I've based a few on the marble to see how they look, yeh. I'm pleased. I do feel however they look a little separate from the base. Maybe a faint shadow under them bring bring it together? They will look nice on the display shelf though and marry up a treat with the flooring of the AoP (Armies on Parade) table idea.

I've been gathering a few bits to get a working concept of the table. An inner nondescript imperial chapel like building, with a large open floor for the army to be displayed on. It will need some structural interest and some story elements which I have an idea for using an old mobile phone.

The inside needs some structure, a doorway into the buildings grandeur, a place for sermons to be held and some side rooms. I found some great mdf terrain, perfect for what I needed from TTcombat. Cheap and looks good. Just need to fill in all these joints. With those made up I can get a feel for the height of the table. I got some pillars from a 40k set to break up the walls which work out the perfect height if I join a pillar and 1/3. The structures are also a believable scale next to the tanks. They don't suspend belief in the piece and draw attention.

"It's been a long time (long time),
we shouldn't left you (left you).
Without a dope beat to step to."

Life's been busy but I've had a little time to get the board underway. Not much exciting to see here yet, just a little update to shows it's still very much in progress. And thank you Twisted Moon, I adopted the technique from the interwebs and it mostly works well. Mostly.

Thanks Symphonic. Lets hope so.

My aim with the walls being angled out is to allow the models on it to present a front-ish view (their best side), when looked at from the front.

So, We've got the walls, door/gate in, got the sermon pit, need something to worship. The emperor maybe? A saint of the Cult Imperialis? Whoever, we need an effigy so this Sigmar statue should do nice, just need to 40k it up a little. Scrub off that sigmar letting and add some Imperial iconography. Luckily many of the symbols on him work as what we are familiar with as crux terminatus honours so, they can stay put.

Just got to fill in the missing scales on the chest and then paint it up.

Then, need to work out a way to get flickering flames in these here braziers.

Drill a small hole from the top down (tricky cause of the length of drill bit.. most smaller ones i have don't go that long). run the two wires through that connecting to the LED termials with the flame cap on top. if you got the room or want to, you can link up all the lights to a centeral switch and battery pack.

though problebly know this ^_^.. Also, depending on your tools and skill.. Hot wire the hole if you haven't got a long enough drill bit. it's a bit tricker if you haven't got something to attach a long piece of thick enough wire to a soldering iron or something, but you can quickly melt a nice smooth hole through most plastics and resins.

Thank you ManicMan, any advice from anyone on anything no matter how simple is always lovingly accepted.

I'm sick with the 'vid at the mo. :( so In between the hot-cold sweats and no energy. I've tried to get a little done. I've painted the walls, which did not go as planned. The gold base coat acted like a high gloss despite being a satin finish and cause the subsequent layers to pool out under the mask/template. It wouldn't even take satin or mat varnishes (they did the same) to give the layers something to key too. It ended up a right old mess. I was going to sand it down, prime and try again.

But I had a go at hand paint over it and trying and get something back that looked like marble instead of bobbly pools of rattle can sprays. It kind of works only I feel the scale is right out, too large but with luck when its all together, it will become part of the whole and work. Just needs some panel lines, a gloss varnish and some "weathering" in.

Something I did on the last board I made was incorporate a couple of old mobile phones for their screens. They worked really well. So, for this one, I've made a fire place and have a video loop of a flames. My idea is to make a little pile of church acolyte bodies in front of it as if they have been killed and thrown in by the 'bad cultists.

Still a long way to go.

Thanks Orjetax. :)

I've got the board / walls painted and a light oil wash "weathering" so far. Shit, it looks like a really bad 80's bed throw rather than scalable marble panels. Something we've all seen on those VHS blue movie tapes from back in the day. :( Well I guess it fits the 1980's Rogue trader era aesthetic. :? Still, I'm hoping some more grime and other bits will tone it down some. Maybe even a grey filter.

Now, I'm honestly not sure how to paint the alter/pulpit, fire pillars and statue base, black marble to break up all that white and focus the eyes to the front? I was originally going to paint the gate house at the back and the alter/pulpit the same white marble style. The idea being like the cathedrals you see where all the walls, floor, pillar alter, etc are made out of the same stone. The thing I didn't factor in with my excitable mind is that typically in cathedrals and churches of that nature, it's a rather mute, passive colour of stone, not over bearing to the eye... unlike the marble effect I've ended up with. Have to think on this a little...

really nice marbling. with the whole worship of even their armour, I really don't see why so many people paint their marines soo dirty.. but oh well, personal taste.. wondering, wouldn't the Pulpit area be chapter colours?

I don't know why but alot of really large marble, doesn't look like smaller bits scaled.. probebly to do with how it's made.. I kow it's a rock but.. how the crystals recrystallise and stuff.. geology isn't my field at all.. I can just about get past the "That's a rock" stage of identifying different ones ^_^
