Ever since I saw the Tom Baker episode where Romana regenerated & tried out a few styles I thought the Doctor was just rubbish at regeneration & had to take what he got.

That was the second Romana. This is Mary Tamm, the first.
Also.. erm.. there is a big debate on that (they were just going for a quick comedy.. not like the modern crap where there are no limits on regeneration, each time they regenerate, they split in two, the doctor is in fact an ancient timelord who was behind them getting the ability to regenerate and over such rubbish they added.. and even at the time they felt showing the Time Lords was too much revealing.. and now? yikes..)

(oh, the script credits on Doctor Who are almost as confusing as in USA shows where the name credited is only one of a BUNCH of writers. without dragging this too long.. USA shows have a group of Writers who all write kinda together, then the one that is deemed did the most is credited as the Writer. But then also have script editors etc. UK shows are normally more 1 person (or a team of 2) who are credited ARE the writers, but some edited by script Writers.. with Doctor Who... sometimes the Script Editor re-wrote the script soo much that THEY are the real writer.)
