How much is too much?

I bought just over 7kg of 1980's lead for £60 at the weekend, so the bargains are still there to be had, but they are becoming harder and harder to find on ebay.

Yikes! That's a Lot of lead! Was that an eBay purchase?

Cheers,

No, I bought it from a friend of mine.

I asked one of those ebay sellers if they really expected people to pay those really high prices.

He said "No, Mr Lopez. I expect them to die."

LOL. I wish life were that funny.

The question remains, how much am I willing to pay for those one or two minis that I need to "finish" my RT army?

Luck bugger. I've long ago mined my lapsed gaming friends' collections for goodies.

I am mostly collecting Rogue Trader stuff and other ancient sci-fi. I have bought many really cheap lots over the years, but lately I have been buying some more expensive minis too.

I think the most expensive stuff I have bought so far was unreleased Blood Bowl troll at £50 and I also bought a Tyranid Dominator last year, it had a similar price, maybe a bit higher. Well I did also buy some Armorcast Titans, they were more expensive, but bargin prices compared to what they cost on Ebay now or Forgeworld Titans.

Usually I try to decide what I think the miniature is worth. Like when I bought the Space Slann, I decided, well, there is only 12, so even if I pay a large price each the total will not be too much. I decided not to bid above £15 on any of them and I got all 12 at that price or lower and ended up with some spares from lots.

Also a thing that helps me to not feel too guilty about what I pay for rare minis, I will just go to GWs website and look at the prices of their current terrible miniatures and suddenly £15 for a Slann is not that expensive.

Often I tend to go higher on prices once I have most from a collection, since it might be harder to close the last holes without buying larger lots, which in the end might be more expensive, if I end up with a lot of things I alreayd have or have no use for.

I have been giving a lot of miniatures away to friends in my gaming group. If I have no use for it and it is of use to them, then I don't want to ask Ebay BIN prices or so. Sometimes I charge a few bucks if I have bought expensive lots and need to make a bit of my money back again.

Something I find a bit harder in collecting old miniatures. If I find that I fall in love with some really obscure stuff it might be even less available than the rare and expensive Rogue Trader miniatures and if I really want them I sometimes just have to pay up when it is available, since it might not be available anytime soon again and often in such cases no one bids against me on Ebay, but start prices can be high.

This year I spent around £50 on miniatures, maybe a bit more, but my economy is crap this year and continueing from late 2013 I try to trade more and paint what I have instead of buying more models.

Apropos of the thoughts that eBay BIN prices are absurd, check out the "Rouge Trader OOP NIB Orc LE4" for $1,100.

I think I saw one go for auction a week or two back at $25.

And I bought a loose one for around $4.

Some if these, we should just smile and shake our heads.

Every time I pay more than I know I should to finally just bag that one mini I unfailingly see it dirt cheap in the next few days or weeks

Feel free to call B.S. but my collecting is pretty much done...óf the armies I collect I have possibly more than I need and just about everything I want, and about 5 years of painting to do

The Tyranid Dominator's are the best example I have here.

When first beginning my foray into rt era tyranids, the Dominator had very little available for information. Limited Release, one mail order Flyer, no general release, worth as much as an average sized army in 5th edition due to the scarcity of models. I played a lot of 5th ed 40k, an average sized army being mech orientated was in the range of a grand, no way I was paying a grand for an old model. One came up as new never been used or assembled froma chap taht worked in the citadel foundry (or whatever the factory was called) at the time. I made an offer for 120 GBP he accepted and I was supremely happy having made a bargain steal literally based on what I had found and considering I wasn't expecting a yes. Then I picked another one up on ebay for about $50 USD and my mind started to rationalise the price difference. I saw others go up and acquired my 3rd for about $35 USD, I had a 4th but the guy selling was a d'bag and demanded payment inside the 3 day window before a case could be opened by ebay standards despite nothinga bout payment being made within those 3 days (I needed 5 till pay day), the sad thingw as he relisted it and it sat for 3 weeks before anyone bought it fi he needed the cash so desperately haha karma. the avareage price for a dominator comes to about $50 USD though I had seen them go for $25 when I didn't have the money or it was listed incorrectly.

Then about 4 months ago this complete tool (b-stores on ebay) hops up and posts up this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Zoat-Tyrani...18?pt=UK_Toys_Wargames_RL&hash=item2589fc9fc6

Yep, a Dominator at $333 USD, it was up originally at closer to $380 USD.

I was appalled. So i contacted the chap and explained very calmly about how it would be severely unlikely that he would not get the asking price at all, that I had acquired 3 dominators, could have had a 4th and had seen 4 others go for an average of $50 USD in the past year and that he should seriously consider changing his prices to reflect that. He stated that he had seena dominator go for $380 USD last week and that his pric4e reflects the true value. It's sat for more then 4 months and not shifted.

Oh look, a new listing appeared, from 'ye alchemist' on ebay (he has a lot of rare stuff - I believe I picked up something decently priced, but mainly it's all severely overpriced like dross), look how much this baby is for:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Warhammer-4...58?pt=UK_Toys_Wargames_RL&hash=item43c5a9ad66

$292 USD. Obvious price undercutting to sell his before b-stores but woah.

This is the first dominator I've seen listed since b-stores stupidly priced one went up and it is so over-costed it is insane. The really sad part is that Dominators, at least in the forseeable future, will not be priced more in line for what they are worth and anyone wanting one, I'd advise to not pay more then $50-$80 USD for one. They simply aren't as rare as that heinous price tag suggests.

The community for Kingdom death: Monster on the kickstarter page (cannot wait!) have a name for ebay - evilbay - because price gouging is more and more common place, and it's sad. It's actually more of a push away prospective people interested in the vinatge stuff and oldhammer with vintage models because the prices are so heinous. Current GW stuff is heinously priced but when that stuff becomes as expensive or cheaper then collecting a vintage army, most people will just move to another system like warmachine/hordes (warmahordes), infinity or otherwise.

For me eBay is a big bullshit to pay 10€ a mini...
Why we have to pay more and more, is because some people are ready to pay 10€ for a mini...
If tomorrow people stop their crazy on eBay, you Will pay the normal price...
For me 3€ a simple mini is the maximum...
Ok, I have already pût more money on a mini but it's finish now.
People have to remember they are only lead toy soldier...
When I saw more than 600£ for the citadel giant... Let me say it's a joke! The mini is not the best sculpt and you can find more interesting stuff... I'm a giant collector but never I Will pay this crazy amount for a mini like that...
No, I think WE have to adjust the market, if we sell our minis or trade on this kind of forum with resonable prices, why we go to sell a harm or a leg on eBay?!? And when the sellers Will try to sell their minis without any chance to find a buyer, they Will begin to sell at a descent price...thanks to all and sorry for my poor English...

The guy at Ye Alchemist is a great guy and I have bought lots and lots from him. If you think something is overpriced message him and let him know where and why.. He will almost always do you a deal.
His prices are high because a lot of people will pay that for old lead and its a business for him but I just got the coatl and jabberwock off him for a lot less than they were listed at.

On a side note I thought I should put in what I have paid for stuff too ;)

This year I have probably spent £300 or so on minis I don't really keep count and it was thousands last year and the year before and before for a while now. Guess you could say I'm a serious lead addict. But I have not paid insane amounts for minis.
The highest I ever paid was £150 for an unreleased space slann and I only got him as I got all 13 from the same guy who was slimming down his collection.
The highest I paid on ebay was £70 for a necromunda limited ed mini from the later run they did that were not produced in big numbers
I am a collector but most minis I will only pay a few quid for and am quite willing to wait a few month to fill in missing gaps in my collection or armies.
Highest I bid on a mini was £250 but I lost the bid which finished at over £400.

i don't know

A lot of those overpriced auctions just stick around forever. I keep seeing the same chaos champions at the same insane BIN prices week after week.
