Holy Grails - You're most sought miniature(s)?

Yeah...I understand! Thanks for the pic. Do you mind if I use this pic in my attempts to track down a copy myself?

Your unit looks amazing!

Cheers,

Blue

Well...if you have a chance I'd love pics of the front and back of the dismounted rider. But obviously no pressure on that...this pic will do for now!

Thanks for keeping hope alive!

⏲ Please note there was roughly a 8 year gap between these posts ...

To bring this thread back from the grave, I think I just picked up a kinda 'Holy grail' item for me.

I've never played it and doubt I ever will but in 1984, the first commercial release was made of the Greg Costikyan and Warren Spector RPG game 'Toon: The Cartoon Roleplaying Game'. Released by Steve Jackson (the USA guy) Games. I don't know how popular it was but reviews were pretty good and there was a number of expansions over the years (Mostly in the 80s) and kinda still in production via reprints. It was highly based on the golden ages of USA cartoons (Looney Tunes, Merri Melodies, etc) In 1985, TAG Industries (who when under and isn't The Assault Group) produced set 1 of the official Toon Miniatures, sculpted by Chris Atkin. There were 8 figures in this first set. They don't seam to have been on sale for long, They don't seam to have been released in the UK and they often seem hard to get hold of. Main ones I've seen are loose for a pretty high price. But there kinda got my interest. I now have a complete set in the original box (I'm not sure what to do but the paper back of the box with the character names and some info on the produce is peeling due to 40 year old glue.. Do I re-glue or leave it? tricky). One needs stripping but rest are unpainted. Not the best price in the world but far cheaper then I've seen them normally go for (if you can find the whole set, let alone the box) so.. I'm happy enough. So a kinda rare but not sort after set. Roughly 25/28mm scale.

Oh and while it was clearly marked as Set 1, No set 2 appeared to have been made so was probably a bit of a flop item. While I think the 8 figures are a good range of types, only a couple really show what they are inspired by (I would say 'The Rabbit' being Bugs, 'Mack Mouse' being Micky Mouse, but the others are a bit looser while still being cartoon archtypes.)

⚠ Please note that until the post above this thread had been inactive for about 8 years ...

I had that RPG and we made PC's though we never played.
No idea there were figures made for it though.
I don't think I'll ever get it and play but alot of things do say it was a great 'introduction' one and fun. I'll hopefully be taking some photos of these figures before and after painting.. IN fact.. I can probebly take some quick ones today ^_^;

Wow, that was quick:

Ah the days of Big box, little content.. The lid is custom print while the bottom is just a glued (only just right now as I said) bit of paper on a plain box)
IMG_20250724_175527_HDR.jpg
Foogle Bird (kinda cross between Forhorn Leghorn and the Martian Bird to me...), Fred Bulldog (BullDog in a trillby... familier but can't really think of many Bulldog characters right now apart from Spike and Tyke... or Bulldog Drummond ^_^;) and Mack Mouse with his large revolver. Micky/Jerry kinda.. but there has been hundreds of generic mice characters like that.
IMG_20250724_175545_HDR.jpgThe Rabbit (Gotta say Bugs cause kinda the Archtype.. with the Pie I'm gonna say more .the Early Bugs, Friz Freleng and Chuck Jones kinda), Harry Beast (The monster from Some Bugs cartoons? reminds me of Sweetums from Muppets for some reason), Olga Hippopovna (no clue.. Russian Hippo? there weren't many Hippo characters much)
IMG_20250724_175603.jpgThe Martian (due to a mixture of my rubbish photo and it being black, you can't see his mustach.. Kinda Marvin but more poddington peas) and Fifi La Feline(Generic female catgirl). while the pening on the Martian isn't great, nor bad, I'm gonna strip him and repaint.
IMG_20250724_175640.jpg
Quick Scale shot with 4th Plastic Clan Rat which I need to finish off. Fifi is one of the smaller ones, Fred is kinda average scale, and Olga is the larger scale.. so.. about 25/28mm

not the best most detailed sculpts but.. For the cartoon style that's fine. They aren't too bad. They were just something that when I saw photos of them years ago, looked a bit fun and quirky and that just interested me.. thus alot of my choices in some figures (I think anyone that has seen my warbands at the Woods in the Woods can see my taste in quirkiness).

Wow dude, when you deep dive, you go real deep! ;)

Recall this RPG being covered in an RPG magazine I had back in the day, but don’t recall any minis! Think you should try to cel-shade paint these guys?

In the list there probably would be :
- the marauder venators
- The Helmawr gangers
- The chaos battle ram
- The asscannon

I could probably think of more but that would only make the pain worse since I'll probably never lay my hands on any of the ones above...
Do you mean Voland's Venators or were there some other Venators???

The grenadier masterpiece editions: some are still in production via Mirliton but I think the original box design lives in my memory.

There were Confeontation Venators. My masked guy here is one of them.

Roborg.

Which may be one of the more attainable grails listed here . . .

Fun to look back at this thread and my comment. I was hot for Roborg in 2014. I am happy to report that by around the pandemic I had bought and painted TWO!

These days I continue to be wild over the Olley’s armies psychic mutant scrunts as my grails.

I almost purchased that TOON assortment many moons ago. I may have played a session or 2 of the game .....

All this talk of Grail Miniatures has inspired me to up my game. I am going to try to collect all the miniatures that appear
in the Warhammer RPG 1st ed color photos and paint them up properly. I own a few now and may refresh the work on them to start.

Ha! Someone after my own heart! I have a long burn project to pick these up too after posting about the pages last year (https://forum.oldhammer.org/threads/wfrp-miniature-pages.37915/). Are you having much luck? They are not cheap! ;)
