Hero's quest for Base sizing

Here is something a little fun... maybe...
Heroquest uses 20x25 mm bases, which is a pain cause the squares are 20x20 (roughly).

okay, that's no problem.. But then you get WD quests and stuff which say 'Hey, Use a Rat Ogre'.. which are on 40x40mm bases. Is it possible to stick a Rat Ogre on a 20x20mm base? … kinda. just not very well.

So then there is a small issue.. If you want to use a quest with a larger base figure like a Ogre, Rat Ogre, Troll etc, you can either base them bloody small and kinda ONLY use them for Heroquest... or you can normal base them and try to figure out how the hell you can use a 40x40mm base to take up 1 square on a 20x20 square grid..

So I ask "What do people do?" Sure, you can say "Well, for Ogres, just use the Ogre Hoard ones" but that's not dealing with the problem, just passing it along for one case. I guess the same things would apply for AHQ and WHQ.. So, whatever your quest, how do you deal with base problems like this?

For HQ'89 or WQ'95 if I can, I tend to base a few big monsters on 25 mm and create 40 mm sub-bases when I want to play them in other games.

makes sense AHQ did rules for larger bases..

oh, and there is only 1 Heroquest.. there is also the yanky rules, but only one Heroquest.

mm.. if I use 25, a bit big but like i said, HQ bases are 20x25.. I could laser cut a 40x40 base which has a 25x25 cut out in the middle.. worth a try ^_^ thanks

nice. I decided to go a slightly different route. I decided I wanted to 3D print instead, so I made a base template which is 40x40, with a 25x25 cut out in the centre. It's 3 mm in height, with a 1mm in the middle under the cutout. because the normal bases are 3mm, there is a slight slope up to the centre. problem is I forgot to take into account the fact that most bases are about 1mm bigger then stated because the bottom is sloped out, but that just needs a bit of sanding. (I'll probebly tweak the design to give a bit more space in the middle.. like an extra mm around)

not great shots but oh well.. that ogre has been waiting for some paint for a while now.. hopefully I'm starting it.. (he also has new arms based on.. erm.. a Battle Masters Ogre with a tiny bit of work on the fingers.. fit really well.

We often don't have this kind of problem with laser cutting because the burn allows you to nibble away at the material ;)

yeah, PLA can be a pain with sanding at times but not to bad, just made more sense then doing movement tray like piece at the moment (plus easier set up for me cause the 3D printer just sits there and needs turning on, where the laser cutter needs a bit of space made, wood attached to the base (it's a desktop model so I doesn't have a special tray or anything to clamp the wood down to keep it flat and stop it from moving.. I mostly use duct tape, but I'm working on something but I need to check sizes and source parts.

When they printed rules for Dreadnoughts in Tyranid Attack in WD they said place the larger base overhanging the square it's supposed to be on. There should be enough space left on the surrounding squares to stick normal minis. I know it's not HQ ruling and it's not perfect but might work.

won't work in HQ at all.. cause 20x20 squares.., 40x40base.. unless it's on the edge of the board, (unlikely but possible) it will always take 4 squares (it would need to be a corner to take only 1, and there are only 4 corners).

HQ always had a problem with the bases being 20x25, and the board being 20x20 squares ^_^
