GW Bookcase Boardgames

Norse

Vassal
I have a small collection of the older boardgames put out by GW. I know the weekend is mostly about getting nice toy soldiers on the table, but does anyone fancy playing one or more of these?

What I have:

Blood Bowl (1st Edition, with all the cardboard standups) - 2 players
Block Mania (with Mega Mania, and the White Dwarf mini expansion) 2-4 players
Judge Dredd - 2-6 players
Rogue Trooper - 2-4 players
Warlock of Firetop Mountain - 2-6 players

Some of them at least can have toy soldiers added if that helps. And I can get the pieces painted up for Warlock and Rogue. Any takers?

Christ! There's so much interesting stuff getting announced for BOYL this year. Makes me glad I chose this year to come in particular. Just afraid that I won't be able to join in all the fun that's on offer.

A bit off topic I know, soryy :(

But yeah, bring the boardgames, the more the merrier. A great idea Norse

There'll be much more to come yet I'm sure Mr Papafakis!

I'm not planning on bringing them all along though, I have snorcling space hoppers and star trek stuff to fit in as well. Was hoping to arrange one or two games in particular and bring stuff for those. Maybe get some of the pieces painted up for them where relevant. If only first edition blood bowl lead wasn't so expensive!

Very happy to play some first edition blood bowl, as long as you're happy with the cardboard players - the appropriate lead is far too rare and pricey. Do you have a copy of the rules yourself for picking a team? It doesn't really take long though so can be done on the day if necessary.

If we can get a few people together for Warlock of Firetop Mountain as well that'd be good. Started preparing the figures for painting! I'd forgotten the squares were so small so not really practical for people to bring their own heroes. Unless they're unbased.

I would be up for a game of any of them and could bring Blood Royale to add to the options if anyone fancies it.

Blood Royale has always looked interesting, but the reported playtime of 4 to 5 hours has always made me think it would be difficult to get onto the table.

Here are some experimental character ideas I've been toying with to make the character miniatures more than just pawns for Warlock of Firetop Mountain, if people are interested in trying them out:

Knight
The Knight has 6 extra points of Stamina and 2 extra pieces of gold.

Elf
The Elf has 1 spell from the Wizard list and may shoot enemies with their bow. Before entering combat, make a Skill check. If passed the enemy suffers two damage. This may be increased by luck as normal.

Dwarf
The Dwarf does not require a lantern to navigate the secret passages and may look at the maze cards at any time. In addition they may use their toolkit to disarm traps. If the Dwarf draws a trap card make a Skill check. If passed, ignore the effects of the trap.

Barbarian
The Barbarian increases their Skill in combat by 2 and carries an extra provision.

Cleric
Roll 2d6 and choose the highest one for the number of Prayers the Cleric carries. Prayers can be expended to Turn Undead or to Heal. Turning Undead automatically defeats any undead monster except for the Wight, and allows the Cleric to attack the Wight without a magic weapon. Heal allows the Cleric to heal themselves or another character of 4 points of damage. The Cleric may not move or take any other action whilst Healing.

Wizard
Roll 2d6 and choose the highest one for the number of Spells the Wizard carries. The Wizard must choose their spells from the following list at the start of the game. Each spell is one use, and may be selected only once:

ESP - Can be used to secretly look at the contents of any room or the the maze cards (but not the key challenge cards!).
Creature Copy - Creates a duplicate of an enemy in combat that fights for you. If you are unwise enough to use this on the Warlock, he will seize control of the copy and you must fight both of them in turn!
Fool's Gold - May be used in place of any one expenditure of any amount of gold.
Levitate - Levitate allows the Wizard to automatically cross the river.
Luck - Return any character's Luck score to it's initial value.
Skill - Return any character's Skill score to it's initial value.
Weakness - Permanently reduce the Skill value of a monster by 2.

If people haven't played Warlock before and just want to play the original that's fine too, I can inflict these on Fimm and Harry at home!

Hi Norse,
I've got the 1st Ed BB rules and would prefer using the cards, it's easier with the prone players striking back etc. Lets go to town and make a couple of champion teams for a showdown!

Goodo, card players it is then. Shall we just do any team we fancy from 1st edition (no death zone or white dwarfs) with 4 SPPs?

Keuringer - Alas, that requires Death Zone, which I do not own. I have the original set, the Skavenblight Scramblers from WD 86 and Dekka's Decomposing Decimators, chainsaws and pit traps from WD 94.

I have meant to get hold of a copy of Death Zone for a while mind. Perhaps if I get hold of it between now and then. But I do remember it adding a lot of complications and therefore time to play, whereas the basic rules are fairly easy to get on with.

In the basic rules there are rules for:

Human teams
Dwarf teams
Elf teams (but no playing pieces as elves generally consider blood bowl beneath them, they suggest using dark elf pieces)
Halflings (but only 6 pieces, as they're intended for the Heroes of Law)
Orc teams
Half-Orc teams (but no playing pieces)
Hobgoblins (but only two pieces)
Dark Elf teams
Chaos All Stars (12 Lesser Goblins and 2 Ogres, Ogres can be replaced with Trolls or Troglodytes)
Champions of Death (a mix of skeletons and zombies, instead of SPP's they can take a single mummy or 4 ghouls)
Heroes of Law (any mix of Human, Dwarf, Elf and Halfling)
Evil Gits (any mix of Orc, Half-Orc, Hobgoblin and Dark Elf)

As previously mentioned I also have the Skavenblight Scramblers. Dekka's Decomposing Decimators are from WD 94 and are a team made entirely of skeletons, four of which have chainsaws. There aren't enough skeleton pieces in the basic box, but I have photoshopped my own pieces from the originals and have added chainsaws to four of them.

Of course, if you have your own copy of Death Zone then you could make teams from any races you have the stats and pieces for and bring them along. Or I can see if I can get a copy of Death Zone twixt now and then at a sensible price.
