Guitarheroandy's Elf Army UPDATE: 21.7.13: 80's Elves pt1!!

Hi

Here are the first pics of my Elves. The Swordmasters and White Lions are 4th edition 1990s models (Marauder, I think?) except for the Swordmaster command who are from a later edition. The Wizard is the Elf Queen model from the 4th or 5th edition (superb model!). The hero is more recent. I painted him and the Queen a few years ago when we did a club campaign. The others were originally painted back in the 90s although I 'refreshed' the colour scheme to give them the blue and purple theme just prior to the afore-mentioned campaign. The bases were replaced last week (previously they were covered in that 90's flock that GW used to do...

I have a bunch of 4th edition plastic/metal spearmen having their bases re-done at the moment and then I'll be doing some 90s Silver Helms. Am just trying to resist buying a load of 80s Elf cavalry...dunno how long I can hold out...the wallet is groaning in anticipation, cos they ain't cheap...but they are nice!!

Anyway, here's today's first offerings...

If you like what you see, keep checking back as I'll update as more stuff gets tidied up or as new stuff gets done (though that may take a little longer!)

Cheers

Andy

Very nice crisp painting. Heh as for the for the new basing i happen to sometimes miss that old GW flock and Goblin Green bases at times.

Re: Guitarheroandy's Elf Army In Progress

Even though I have a distinct dislike of all things pointy eared  , your Elves look very great.

i happen to sometimes miss that old GW flock and Goblin Green bases at times.
When I do paint anything, which is not often, I still use flock, it is a bit tricky getting static grass here so I stick with the tried and tested.

Re: Guitarheroandy's Elf Army In Progress

Nice! Especially the banners!

Regarding flock, I've been trying to find a match for the old GW flock for ages.

Re: Guitarheroandy's Elf Army In Progress

Great work - classic white, blue and silver scheme still works a treat 8-)

Re: Guitarheroandy's Elf Army In Progress

great stuff, as a Dwarf player it pains me to say that but cant lie they are fine looking pointy ears

Re: Guitarheroandy's Elf Army In Progress

I can see your Arthurian techniques in there, great work

Re: Guitarheroandy's Elf Army In Progress

That's a righteous looking unit of High Elves you got there. Something my unscrupulous Dark Elves would love to tear apart.

Re: Guitarheroandy's Elf Army UPDATE: 21.7.13: 80's Elves p

Well, after months of EBAYing and generally not painting, I finally pulled my finger out (as it were) and painted the first two 80's Elves from the pile I have recently amassed...

Here is the General and a Wardancer...

I have discovered that I am now incapable of painting eyes (my own are pretty well shot for that level of detail) and I decided straightaway to not bother being too traditionally 80's in my basing style either! However, all things considered, I like these guys! They have painted up really well. Am in the middle of painting a test swordsman and then it's onto a unit of 10 knights, all mounted on mail-barded horses to be the General's bodyguard... Mighty hard they look too (we'll soon fix that with a few flowers on the bases though!! )

Enjoy!

Looverly painting going on there, tasty stuff indeed (and I hate girly elves too)

PS green bases FTW :ugeek:

Very nice - they look great and almost intimidating with all that silver chainmail!

Seriously though I might have been tempted to go with different colours for painted armour or used gold - I think your silver is much more understated and effective 8-)

Re: Guitarheroandy's Elf Army UPDATE: 21.7.13: 80's Elves p

As mentioned on LAF....just lovely. My fondness for Goodwin elves is growing...

...don't tell the lads over at Bugman's! :?

Cheers,

So it was you that was bidding up the prices on the old elves the last couple of months! I'll stay off elves on ebay for now then, gotta start stripping and priming my own lot as well.

Nice job on the elves, looking good so far!

Re: Guitarheroandy's Elf Army UPDATE: 21.7.13: 80's Elves p

Thanks for the kind words, folks. Wait til you see the unit of 10 Silver helms on armoured horses... I've made a start on them...

It's funny, while I have spent a fair bit of cash on EBAY buying some models (including a mint boxed Elven attack chariot...yummy!) I also picked up a box of approx 45 cavalry and 40 infantry models for £52 which had to be the bargain of the century given the prices I paid for some stuff from some other sellers...

Damn! That is a deal! Was that on eBay? I have to start looking closer...:)

Let me know if you have spares...;)

Re: Guitarheroandy's Elf Army UPDATE: 21.7.13: 80's Elves p

It was on EBAY - the man advertised them as 90's Elves'. I stumbled on them by accident. Talk about striking gold!!! It's that find that enabled me to put together 10 Silver Helm cavalry on armoured horses, although I had no spears or shields so have had to look to current 'bits' (Dragon Prince lances and, believe it or not, trimmed dark Elf infantry shields) to complete the models...

There will be spares. I'll list (and photograph) them when I get the chance - probably in a couple of weeks when I have some leave coming up.

Re: Guitarheroandy's Elf Army UPDATE: 21.7.13: 80's Elves p

I collect high elves myself, and this is beautiful stuff. The general and wardancer... just wow. Have to say, one of the things I've long worried about (some may find this silly) is whether the chainmail of figures like those would look out of place in an army with my (scale-mail clad) mid-90s figures. Looking at these, I'm coming to think the answer may well be no.

Need to give this more thought! Keep up the good work.
