Last year I wanted to participate in the Golden Gobbo but life kinda got in the way and that miniature, a Wurrzag mounted on a boar from 6th ed., still sits unfinished.

BUT...it's orctober again and I wanted a small pause from painting my Drukhari army, and just happened to read the Golden Gobbo announcement because @Wilbur the Red shared it on Mastodon, so, here we are!

I'll be entering the contest with one of the most popular orcs from Warhammer Fantasy, Grimgor Ironhide.

For a leader on foot whose legal base size is the 25x25mm one, the miniature is big and chunky, and weighs quite a bit.

After a bit of filing, I prepped the base with texture paint using some 2mm masking tape on the sides to prevent staining them. The texture paint is Vallejo's Desert Sand (26.217) from the Diorama FX series.

And it's prime time! I primed it by brush using Vallejo's Black Primer (73.602)

Time to start painting it! I know some people prefer painting with it's medium tones as a base color and then add both shadows and lights, but I always paint from shadows towards light, so my base coat it's always the darkest.

However, at this point I realized the filing I did was not enough and there were some rough areas and imperfections, so before continuing I decided that I'd strip it clean again and start over instead of working around the defects because some of them were quite visible.

Still, before stripping it, since I wanted to change my usual orc skin recipe that leans more toward a vibrant green lime (see the gretchin on my avatar), I did a quick test on the head to see if it would work. It leans more towards a blue-ish green and I am quite satisfied with it.

After a bath in some hardware depot paint stripper that works wonders with metal minis, I primed it again using my airbrush this time, and gave it some black paint on the armor and some grey highlight with it too, and started on my base coat again, which is almost finished except from some minor details like the axe and the dagger handles.

I also varied the texture paint on the base, since I had to damage the first one to get the miniature out. This time I decided to use ground used coffee that I save for basing with some cyano-glue, and once it was dry, I painted over it with AK's Wet Ground texture paste, which is a dark brown with some finer particles that works pretty well with the ground coffee going in between.

Let's see if some time later this week I can advance it a little more.
