Goodbye Greenstuff?

Gosh quite sad seeing Drew so cut up. I've got some rubbish stuff which is only any good for filling junky gaps, my proper Kneadatite I started keeping in the freezer some years ago and that seemed to keep it reasonably. I don't use that much since I don't sculpt, but it's such a nice filler. Given the loss of Procreate as well what are our talented sculpting folk to do!
 
Aren't there several other companies making practically the same thing? It's a shame that PSI has shuttered, but as far as I was aware, they only really supplied the US market anyway. I've used both and found them ndistinguishable tbh, but then I'm only an amateur.
 
well.. original green stuff wasn't even for modellers and yes, there are tons of companies that make green stuff.. it's kinda a pretty common stuff.. no clue what type I use.. cheap generic stuff which I have no clue who made it ^_^;

it's a shame when a company goes under like that but.. surely the original creatures of green stuff were Sylmasta? Or atleast, they have the Kneadatite brand name. And it's the stuff Kev Adams claimed it was using since 1984..

so... All I know about who Polymeric systems were was a new company (2010) which dissolved in 2019 to create a new company more then just remade.. and that I checked up on. So.. just a company that copied others to create green stuff that other people made.

sure, it's a local company to him but.. as I'm not anywhere near.. looks like Cheshire was there home base when Polymeric...., it doesn't really mean much to me... Not like Green stuff is going anywhere as the original creators are still making it for a start.

might watch the full video sometime but.. I don't get it. local company going, shame. He had alot of trade with them? again, shame. I was fairly cut up when the community centre I worked at for... 15 years closed.. but.. it's not like the services aren't or can't be performed someplace else.

I can't remember the actual brand used in the studio in the early 90s, but from memory it used to come in two big metal tins like paint cans.
 
I was just quote from an article that Kev did when he created the Goblin Master site.. which it is a shame he doesn't do more minis for but oh well ^_^
 
My fear would be that the demand was small enough that it really might be Sylmasta and everyone else were just repackaging the stuff, as Drew says. How many factories would it take to fill the entire global demand? I'm guessing the answer to that is a pretty clear "one." This sort of thing happens sometimes. An artist friend was relating to me that there are two different yellow watercolor pigments that have recently gone completely off the market because they were automotive pigments that watercolor companies bought and the auto companies quit using them since there was another pigment that worked better for them, but the new pigment doesn't work in watercolors. And the art demand wasn't big enough to keep the line open. Well, I'd bet we're even smaller than that, so it's not too surprising that when the original demand for a thing we use dries up we're out of luck. There are some other products, and some similar stuff. Drew does say GSW's product is different, if you're okay buying from GSW. And hey, that's probably something out of China, so maybe you can buy direct from their supplier if you're not. Since it's a chemical reaction Kneadtite's formula is most likely protected by a patent, which will eventually expire if it hasn't already and someone else could set up a line using a different name for the product. Maybe look up the patent?

Nope. Sylmasta is a HUGE company and there plumbing putties such a major part of them (in fact, they do a few epoxy's and stuff, and they aren't really going anywhere. Also, there is no way the amount made is only a small factory. mm.. Symasta head office is near me? weird...

That said, they moved the Kneadatie original formula over to there sylcreate section which is for modelers, while thy also so other formulars like a bit stuffer type etc.

Oh hey.. I just looked at the 'examples' they have.. two quotes from people saying how good the stuff is.. one being Kev Adams, the other.. a guy I never heard of called 'David Parker' from AFV Modeller magazine.. But the first miniature they show having been made the stuff, is Sir Hector from Northumbrian Tin Soldiers Cats of Crumptown range ^_^ I know that range well.. shame they mostly sell other companies stuff and don't do many original minis (and they try to burry them on their site)... and they don't like to credit sculptors.. ugh.. this is really becoming a thing with me the more and more I look around.. I knew alot of places didn't but... it's getting really beyond a joke with the lack of credit of sculptors compared to pretty much EVERY OTHER art/design field.

That's what Drew was saying. Manufacture occurred in the USA and Sylmasta were repackaging in the UK. I would assume the GSW stuff was created by spectrographic analysis of the "real stuff" which is why it's not quite the same. I suspect this is indeed the end of the line for Kneadatite as we know it if the Patent is indeed owned by PGG rather than Sylmasta (and licensed to PSI/Whitfort/PGG).

Have you tried Magic Sculpt? If you really liked it you can buy it in 45kg lots - granted for £1.8k!

Fingers crossed then they do make it in the UK then! Would be excellent news if they do.
 
about ten years ago, I believe Polymeric made it for worldwide but with the amount of companies using using that brand name for their form of green stuff, I'm not sure sure. The official 'Kneadatite' website is run by Sylmasta, though they say the name is trade marked.. y'know what, I'm gonna contact Sylmasta and see what they say ^_^
 
And I already got a reply. Good news and bad news.
they have also got ALOT of e-mails about this so wondered if there was a place spreading the info ^_^

Bad news) PGG stopped production and DIDN'T tell any of there distributors. that's very naughty of them

Good news) It's a major thing (not the only major thing but still) for Sylmasta so they will me producing there own but this will be fully announced when ready.

so I don't think green stuff is going away anytime soon

some nice little background and yes, it's a major part of the company, they do other putties too but still want to do green stuff. They have been thinking about making some locally for some time but now they are actively developing a new version for their UK factories which should be released in a few months. However, they are interesting any comments people have about what they like of green stuff and what they don't like.

They will be focusing on the stick format green stuff because of peoples comments on the curing in the middle of the strip, so will be doing 2 sticks of 50g in a tube and if any modellers have any feedback for bits they would like tweaked, they will take some feedback.

So again, sounds good
 
Thanks @ManicMan, very kind of you to make enquires. Hopefully having had so much experience with the stuff their version will be a closer match than the GSW product. Swapping to purely a stick format seems no bad thing, it is annoying sometimes having to cut out a small cured section. Sounds like I won't need to manically panic buy every bit of yellow and blue I see!

@Drew Day Williams may yet be stuck sculpting for many years to come! :)

Ace. I did buy 180cm of it this morning to stick in the freezer though, just in case! Can they please duplicate the procreate recipe as well now?
