Gaming Krull?

I was browsing through Zhu's blog looking for the 2nd Edition points calculator when I read a comment about it being the same rules used to stat up creatures for Rogue Trader. Why would they bother, I thought, after all, no-one is really going to pit a fantasy army against a sci-fi one are they? Well, not unless they're doing a version of Rorke's Drift.

Then it hit me.

Krull.

The amazing 1983 sci-fi/fantasy film of good versus evil and the triumph of true love over darkness.

In case you haven't seen it, these evil dudes (let's call them "chaos space marines" ;)) in the service of The Beast pour forth from their fortress-spaceship and gatecrash a wedding intended to unite the two sorta-medieval kingdoms that might then team up to defeat The Beast.

So then you get a decent scenario for a battle between the spaceslugs in armour with one-shot laser guns, and the fantasy medieval types:

They capture the princess and take her to the Death Star, sorry "Black Fortress", where Vader, no "The Beast" holds her captive, leading to a D'n'D party of hero, wizard, Lawful-Good cyclops, rogue and henchmen having to find the super fast horses and use the information from the spider queen... <ahem> heading off to save the day, via a rather cool little skirmish in the swamp:

So, now to ask - would 2nd Ed and RT combine seamlessly to make this a linked set of gaming scenarios that would reach gaming nirvana? Or have I misunderstood the whole stat equivalence thing? Has anyone already done this? Or is this whole thread evidence that being around superglue fumes really is bad for your health?

Opinions and suggestions very welcome :)

KRULL and "The amazing sci fi/fantasy film" .... two things I never thought I'd see in the same sentence.

Ok, slightly tongue-in-cheek, but I remember it fondly. I was quite surprised by the level of scorn poured on it online! :?

Ok, ok - now, back to the game idea. Any thoughts? Even general thoughts about RT/Fantasy crossovers that would provide an entertaining gaming experience without it being Zulu in disguise?

Honestly, with a good scenario and GM it could work very well. Remembering that the core rules are the same and that going down the Oldhammer route of "it's about a fun game rather than balance", it should be great fun.

Jumping background a bit - dark eldar pirates kidnap an important person/people/love interest from a settlement on a low tech world and a band of heroes (with some cannon fodder) quest to rescue them before the leave the planet.

Now we just need some appropriate miniatures, some amazing gaming scenery and were set to go!

I think the reason the PV system is the same is:

1 it's easier than reinventing it from scratch,
2 The clash of technologies - but look at how things balance - most RT tech isn't very good...
2.1 A Bolter is less effective than an Elven bow
2.2 Powered Armour is only as effective as Full Plate +Shield (but without the movement penalties)
3 lesbian anarcho-feminist punks with laser guns.

4. Many of the scenarios in the RT book are on Feral and Agri worlds.
5. Krull, Krull KRULL!!!

Mixing fantasy and sci-fantasy can work well, a few Space Marines helping the local medieval-tech militia against some mutant raiders who are armed anarchic black-powder weapons. Warhammer Siege has a lovely picture of some "Medieval Squats" fighting an Ork Dreadnought. BTW Siege suggests a standard fantasy army should be allocated 25% more points than a 40k one, but to be completely honest, this is poppycock - thos heavy weapons and vehicles should be watched out for.

You have to watch out for things like area effect weapons, grenades, and especially the more esoteric grenade types. If you avoid them then the two systems should match up pretty well. I would choose one system for rules and just port across equipment. I would probably go with 3rd ed, and import the 40k weapons and equipment.

This would also be my advice, although I would limit my concerns to template weapons with huge radius and high strength weapons in general (leave the macro cannons at home). Soft templates should only be an issue if you have the medieval side fight in rank and file.
In addition you can always skim through the magic section of the Warhammer rule book - those strangely silver bladed weapons did not show red sparkles for nothing...

Now I am very sad that I sold my first edition Dark Eldar plastics.

And what game isn't improved by such creatures?

So basically I had misunderstood the relevance of a common point system, but the idea might still work if I'm careful? I can live with that!

Magic might be a better approach, Niibl, good thinking, while also flicking back through Siege for some pointers. I hadn't really envisaged using vehicles or area-effect weapons, but I can see how they would totally FUBAR a game. Sensible scenario design (as ever) would be the key to an enjoyable gaming experience.

Time for some more reading and, of course, 80s sci-fi/fantasy films (Legend, Masters of the Universe, Krull...)

Perhaps a summer game to make up for me missing BOYL, eh, antipixi?

Watched Ralph Bakshi's Wizards again last night. Perfect example of spear-throwing Elves vs. Laser-gun toting Goblins, it's what Rogue Trader was made for :)
