Games Workshop - Judge Dredd Game?

Okay, I've decided to ask about this.

As people should know, Games Workshop/Citadel got the rights for 2000AD stuff, mostly Judge Dredd and released some nice miniatures as well as some stand alone games (Judge Dredd Board game has been re-issued a few years back), the main one they did was the Judge Dredd RPG but they did a couple of others. But the one thing they didn't appear to make was a Miniatures game, like a skirmish game or small time combat.

I was talking with.. I have completely forgotten his name at this years TwiTwu and we were talking about 2000AD games and how most attempts to do Judge Dredd as a miniatures game hasn't been fantastic and I commented about being suprised that GW didn't do one when they had the license, they just did Roleplay and some board games. He said they did do one, based on the Rouge Trader rules and it was released in White Dwarf.

well.. I've been through all the articles in White Dwarf that I know of to do with Judge Dredd, and it's all the RPG pretty much. In fact, a tiny bit for Block Mania board game and....erm.. Blood Bowl. So a team of Mega-city one characters can form a blood bowl team...

But I can't find any rules for a possible miniature based game. I think it's mis-remembered.
 
^_^ thanks. I think I caught his name once and that was it so, didn't really catch it. Had a nice game again him and fun to talk with.

I guess I could try to do something but... not sure.. there are two things I kinda need to get some help with that I'm more interested in ^_^

one thing that brought it up was how there just hasn't been a decent Judge Dredd Miniatures game. The warlord one... sigh.. WAY too much based on buckets of dice. They did give the basic rules for free. I liked how Judges were quite expensive for your force, so you would have one or two and that's your army, where the other guy would have a bunch of thugs but... sigh.. I just didn't get on with the combat rules.. tried a few games but... it just appeared to be too over the top.. something nice like 'attacker roll vs defender roll with modifiers' would be fine but... add to that dodge rolls and armour rolls and... I don't know if we just completely screwed something up but it was just ugh.

I have thought long and hard about the judge dredd/2000AD universes seeming failure to transfer to the tabletop and my conclusion is that companies either only get the rights to one universe and run out of the good stuff (everyone will buy a dredd or two, not many people are going to buy generic ganger number 57 from prog 221.) Or in the case of warlord they get all the rights but try and use the same big box game template for all of them then don't support them.

I've even pitched a 2000AD game before based on the helter skelter/multiverse idea, where you just buy any miniature of a character you like and form them up into grab bag groups to face off against each other in silly little cross over adventures. that way the avid 2000AD fan will actually be able to buy a klegg, a dredd, a nemesis, a handful of norts, nikolai dante, and 5 choppers, and actually use them all in a game.

I have never read the Dredd RPG rules. Was it miniatures based? I know Games Workshop liked to slap a role-playing label onto things that were not RPGs because that's where they perceived the money to be. That persisted into the 1990s.
 
There has kinda been some so-so board games. Helter Skelter which was based on Wildlands (which is a so-so not too bad board game). small teams. In Helter Skelter one your teams (factions) are Judges (Dredd, Giant (jr probebly), Anderson, Chief Hershey and Mean Machine), Nikolai Dante (So Dante himse,f Elena Kukarin, Viktor Romanov, Jena Makarov, Kulu Romanov), Strontium Dogs (Gronk, Middenface McNulty, Wulf Sternhammer, Johnny Alpha, Durham Red) and Sláine (Sláine (both normal and Warped), Niahm, Kai and Ukko).

but it's not really what you think of. It's mostly an object collection game. Which isn't bad BUT. Then you have the Mega-City one board game which isn't too bad but limited.

For the RPG game.. Kinda have miniatures. As in you have the floor plans and use the miniatures so you can see where things are and stuff. Kinda a 'don't NEED' but they make things more fun.

I wonder if a scenario pack approach would have worked - so you buy small sets of models as a boxed set which come with a good solid mini campaign, two or three games perhaps. Augment that with additional models, etc. As to a good system, well there are plenty to choose from other than rolling a new one so to speak. However I guess you want something that feels 2000AD ...
 
Citadel had some fantastic price offers with them Scenario packs. kinda buy the lot, or just the odd one, or you could by them figures normally anyway, but the buy the lot deals were often great. From the figures you see on the second hand market, it often appears people didn't really buy the complete set as one thing.

while it doesn't 100% fit, a while back I found someone made custom cards to use Dredd and some others in a game of Zombicide, so they used it as a Necropolis story. Sounds like a good idea as that would work (play a fair bit of Zombicide. quite a simple ruleset but can be very strategy focused) but they never released there custom cards ¬_¬ oh well, not as if I can make some but.. still annoying.

there were some rules for using wfb2 to play judge dredd games in citadel journal spring '86.

a lot of what became wfrp (1st edition) was tested in the judge dredd role-playing game. not really miniatures based.

Ah the Third Journal... I know that one but.. damn, with all the Skaven and stuff, I never noticed that before..

yes BUT I'll point out that the JDRPG and it's add-ons very much came with not only floor plans but card characters as figures. So... debatable how much you want to call it miniature based.. I mean, they went to the trouble of giving you the miniatures (as card) which they did with all the WFB scenario packs.

I'll have to go through my copy some point to double check how much they suggest there use is but I think it's mostly visual and to keep track of stuff.. old RPG stuff.
