Freebooters' Fate?

Has anyone played this game? I love the look of the miniatures, although it's quite pricey, but what's really got me sold are boards like this one:

Not that I NEED to collect more minis, or learn more rule sets, or make more terrain, but if I'm going to have a pirate crew and ship for Oldhammer Ahoy, well, why not have another game I can play with them? :)

Re: AW: Freebooters' Fate?

As I am part of the Freebooter Crew you can just ask me.
Dont expect answers to very lawyerish rules questions though. All the playtest rules have made my memory somewhat vague on specifics (other crewmen are responsible for the rules department).
You can ask me about terrain building though, especially that table from the link.

I don't have any specific questions as I've never seen it played, but a quick flick through the pdf starter book looks quite interesting. How long are games usually? How many characters per side? Can you generate statlines or do you have to use the ones sold specifically with the miniatures? Is it narrative-driven or a killing spree? 8-)

I've been playing it since it first came out and have some crews. The game is a ton of fun. Its a light skirmish game that works best with around 5-7 minis per side, and can play just as well on a 2' x 2' table as a 4' x 4' table. The key is having lots of terrain and making sure to have some vertical options. The card bluff mechanic for combat is a joy, and gameplay is very cinematic.

Two crews, the cards, and the book are all you need to play. There are some extras now, like expansion books and equipment cards, but they are are not necessary to have a great time.

There are just no official rules for making your own stat lines, I'm afraid.
But noone is keeping you from making your own to play with your friends. Try not to over do it and you should be fine.
But there are many different characters now, so maybe you don't have to customize that much anyway.
As I usually use the app I just replace the card pictures with photos from my conversions and sometimes I add an equipment card or two.
For me that is sufficient.

Like Con-fusion said, 7-8 miniatures is the average amount of miniatures. Goblins and Cult will have slightly more if you focus on weak/cheap characters.
Just for handling reasons I prefer to stay below 10 charcters, but that is just me and with my imperials that is easy to do.
Of course, the more characters you have, the longer the game takes too.
I'd say that a normal game takes 1,5 to two hours depending on the crews and the concentration of the players.
(Sometimes beer and pretzels are just the more dominant factors.)

How narrative the game is depends on you. We do not have rules for character advancement so you would have to improvise here.
The books contain a lot of szenarios though and although you do have the basic "take them all out" szenario you have many more dealing with hunting, fetching, and other things to do in various forms. The Dodo hunt comes to mind and the zombie octopus szenario.

Terrain is also important and for me it is half of the fun - and with the right terrain comes the narrative plot anyway.
Just adjust existing szenarios as you see fit.

There are plenty of official scenarios, and excellent fan-made scenarios abound.

My group has played the fan-made Devil Crab of Badazuela scenario a number of times. We use the giant crab in my paint log, and it's a ton of fun.

A personal favorite moment in that particular scenariuo was when my Master of Assassins teleported into Revlugg (a goblin pirate pistoleer) and shoved him off his perch at the top of a ruined building and down into the waiting maw of the Devil Crab. Pure happiness.
