Favorite Oldhammer Painter?

Maybe makes more sense with smooth 3d sculpted stuff but doesn't do anything for me. I guess it's a projection of nmm which I'm also not a fan of on gaming miniatures. Works ok in a diorama, sometimes.

I kinda pity the artist that has to deal with THAT inker for their comic work.. has an interesting style on figures but 'comic book style'? yikes... not even Colletta...

It's an interesting style to see, I wonder if it's developed from a need to differentiate. I think the standard of mini painting has increased in general and with the proliferation of tutorials and a fairly "common" way to paint this is a way to stand out much as the top tier painters of the past did both by dint of their talent and the smaller nature of the audience.

I'm the complete opposite where I don't really like using metallic colours to paint with and prefer a sort of slightly exaggerated palette and primary colours to make the miniatures stand out.

Its a really interesting technique and there are some really impressive displays of that cell shade style, have had to double take that it is a 3d model on some!

It's an interesting style and I do like it on some models, especially figures and mecha, but for Oldhammer it doesn't quite work to me. That said, I do rather like the idea of painting minis to resemble 2D illustrations, and I'd love to see some models painted to resemble, for example, watercolour art- or if you were feeling particularly nutty the rotoscoping used in some of Ralph Bahshi's work, notably LOTR and Wizards. I can especially imagine undead being painted like the Nazgul here being quite effective, and honestly it wouldn't be TOO difficult to do; would require some planning and a bit of restraint but a really dark black base with the rough highlights of a few spot colours could look very striking, and quite quick too once you'd gotten the technique down.

tricky but when I think of all the old painters of miniatures and the ones which I've probably tried to emulate the most, while also working on my own style... the first name that comes to mine is Mike McVey. I'm not sure if he had (probably did) a WD spotlight but... yeah.. SOO much great stuff and used soo much.. one reason for wanting to visit foundry and Warhammer world.

I was about to say McVey too, but this is probably because I saw more of his work AND his name, than all the others combined. Luckily this thread is a great source of knowledge.
