Jeez, I paid a lot less for a pristine unpainted model. What do people generally consider reasonable? Lately I haven't spent more than $1 USD per model.

Considering the amount of times I've seen massive prices slapped on this guy a £10.99 BIN with best offer option ain't too bad if you just want the thing now. These days any of the Jes Goodwin ogres for less than a tenner on Ebay is ok in my book. If you can consistently pick them up for less than a dollar then good on ya and please point me to your seller. ;)

We'll to be fair I got my Hrothyogg for about 11 USD. For 20mm and 25mm based models, I don't spend more than $2 and usually pay $1. Cavalry runs between $1-$4. I don't mind if others don't mind spending more, but I'd hate to see it detract from the hobby.

Now fellas, we can argue all day over who payed who how much and why, but the important thing is THIS ONE WAS BOUGHT BY MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

These Chaos Warriors are closer to $3.50 a piece, but if you factor in about $8 for shipping, they are $2 a piece. If you want to pay through the nose, these Chaos Warriors are $4 each (but again, if you figure in $8 at the post office for packaging and label, they are $3 a piece). Here are six mounted Chaos Warriors (including a rather rare hero model) for $2 and change each. And so on and so forth.

I don't mean to raise a fuss... and I don't mean to derail this thread! It is just that I feel things are moving towards "I want to pay $15 for THAT model" instead of "I want to pay a reasonable amount for A SUITABLY SIMILAR model". I'm not much of a stamp collector, and it gives me the shivers to think the community is moving towards the format of trading cards—bragging about that rare item that makes the rest of us envious enough to shell out unreasonable amounts of money for molded lead! But, to each their own.

A while back, there was an eBay auction lot for 50 classic Chaos Champions. It inevitably went up to $250 or thereabouts, clearly more than any of us want to stomach, but easy enough for an eBay reseller (scalper?) who then immediately re-listed them for $11 each. From $5 to $11... a hefty profit, especially considering the eBay reseller A) did zero work and B) added zero value to the product or process.

Collecting is a inextricably linked to the hobby for many people and I don't think its a bad thing. I am perfectly happy to buy a model I want for 50p in a bulk lot, but if its market worth is £10, that's also fine. Market value is market value after all - availability and competition determine value and there's no escaping it.

Many, many people collect all kinds of things and it could be considered insulting to effectively say they're all idiots with more money than sense. I recognise that some folks are happy to play with any suitable model for the right price - it makes perfect sense if you are more interested in the game. Equally, I recognise (and have) the desire to buy particular models to fill out a collection or particular interest, and would expect others to have no issue with that side of the hobby.

I like collecting, but I only collect things which I want to paint and potentially game with.

It is not a problem for me to see other people having rare and expensive models. I enjoy seing other have succes in their collecting and painting old lead. I like seing new lead painted too of course ;)

Am I envies when I see others have rare things I don't have? Yes I am, but it is part of the "sport". Don't misunderstand me, I buy, paint and collect a lot of miniatures which are currently available and I enjoy that a lot too, but it is just a really great feeling, when I finally get an OOP model I have been after for years (hopefully for a fair price too).

Another thing I really like is searching through the internet to find obscure and unknown miniautes, both those available and those OOP. It really just is a joy to find something unkown to the masses and try and give it a place in some gaming universe. Finding suitable substitues for old and rare models is great too and sometimes might take just as long as getting the orignals (But much cheaper).

For me collecting is just as big a part of the hobby, for me, as painting and gaming, maybe bigger actually.

It is a hunt and not having a really huge budget makes me have to be lucky and patient a lot of the times and I think that is probably a good thing. Unlimited funds would be nice, but there is no sport in just handing out the money and buy everything on the want list at any available BIN price.

 Sorry, just my 2 cents. I guess we are all in the hobby in different ways.
