Dwarf swivel gun rules?

They look great defensive weapons. Only a 12 inch range but capable of destroying an entire rank. But will probably only get one, maybe two shots off. 3 to 13 strength 6 hits per shot, but can't penetrate beyond the first rank.

What is the typical frontage you will be fighting?
I guess 4 or 5? So they will likely kill no more than 5?

Unless of course you are shooting a unit of 10 skirmishing archers, in which it will completely mash them up with a half decent roll.
But would it really scatter that wide, maybe as wide as 20".

Gamey or not, you decide!

The rules I've found for chaos dwarf ones aren't the most clear. You automatically hit a target model plus D6 models to either side, which is where the 3 to 13 models comes from. Each gets hit with a S6 hit with -2 save. It says additional hits don't carry over to the second rank, you only hit the front rank, "even if the front rank has been destroyed before all hits have been used up".

So if you got 9 potential hits on a rank of 5 troops, do you just get 1 hit on each of the five models, with four potential hits wasted, or do you inflict 9 hits on the front rank? It describes it as a giant shotgun.

My thoughts would be one hit on each with 4 wasted, but that also seems a bit odd for a shotgun effect?

"1 hit on each model"

"thus between 3 and thirteen models can be hit by a single shot"

I say the 4 are wasted, the gun shoots super wide with enough shrapnel to hit 9 models, but there are simply no models there to be hit, so just the front rank of 5.
