Dwarf Sappers Question

So dwarf players. I decided a couple of years ago to write an army list paint it and then that army never changes. Very stillmenesk. My 3000 pt dwarfs will finish this year and when they are done they are done. Until then I can tweak. I have 2 sapper teams in the list which is 60 points or 5%. I am thinking those points could add armour to artillery crews and xbows and maybe a standard for the warriors with spears.

So the question is are sappers worth having actually on the table? The models will still make it I need 15 civilians for the baggage train!

I've never used them personally. I could potentially see the point of a team to make stockades for artillery or missile troops but at 2" of stockade per turn, it's going to take a while to build a wall for a typical missile unit. Plus if you lose one of the pair, then the other is useless. But sticking a stockade up in front of a swivel gun could give it enough survivability to actually get to fire.

I can see the bridge building being useful in a scenario game, but dwarfs are generally so slow that by the time they'd got to a river and built a bridge (which would only be 1.5" wide) you'd likely be out of turns.

I think they sound really fun, potentially useful, and could be amazing in a GM run scenario game, but in a straight up battle I doubt they'd have too much value. I probably wouldn't spend 5% of my budget on them, especially if you're going to fix and never change your list. Something more flexible might be better. If you weren't fixed on having a fixed army list I'd be tempted to take a team if I knew I was going to be on the defensive.

They're the sort of thing I'd love to play around with, but not as a permanent part of a fixed roster. Although, as I say, I've never used them, so someone may correct me and say they never leave the barracks without a couple of teams!
