Dungeon Crawl? What to get? Where to start?

Hello, I have a series of questions regarding Dungeon Crawl miniature gaming.

Ever since I played Hero Quest as a kid I really liked a good old Dungeon Crawl. Later I have mostly played sci-fi games, but I would really like to do some Dungeon Crawl game again at some point.

I have tried taking out Hero Quest again many times, but let's face it, it is far from a good game.

So I have some stuff on my wishlist for a really good Dungeon Crawl. These are based on some different things, which I will get into from point to point.

1. Good rules! Rules should be at least some how balanced between different characters and evolving characters would also be great.

2. Should be fun to play for 2 players. I like to play with more players, but as things are right now I will probably just be playing board type games with my wife. A game master and a player is ok, but would be cool with a self controlling game, where both players can control characters (Warhammer Quest?)

3. Game should be available. Either a game which is currently in print, a DIY type game where I can use what I have, print some cards and tiles or such or an OOP game which I can make a DIY version of myself or buy cheap.

4. Ideally I should be able to use whatever miniatures I have lying around or miniatures should be included in the game.

5. Also rules should not be too advanced. It is no problem for me, but complicated rules tend to frighten off my wife and I will end up having a "play once, then throw away" game.

Maybe some more pointers are missing. But any suggestion would be appreciated.

Right now I am leaning towards making a DIY Warhammer Quest set. But I know next to nothing about the game, so I don't know if it is a good idea or takes forever.

Nothing I can think of which matches your criteria currently exists including Warhammer Quest.

Maybe D&D 3.5 with any 1 inch tile set and your own miniatures.

There is a Kickstarter campaign underway from Mantic called Dungeon Saga which might just end up being what your looking for. But it doesn't come out for a year.

The game I have played in print that is most like a true sucessor to HeroQuest is called Dungeon Venture Published by the Italian game company Stratelibri.

I have looked at the Mantic game, which I am considering. I am in no real hurry, mostly trying to check out my options before just plunging in.

There is Cavern Crawl, which I havent played but may suit your needs. Its written by a member of this forum too so any questions you have should get answered.

Thanks, I will look into this. I think I already read about this previously, but had already forgotten again. This Dungeon urge comes back to me now and then, but I have yet to really get something going.

Sorry, I did read your pre requisites but what about Advanced Heroquest?

Any suggestion is welcome. I am mostly trying to hear about pros and cons of lot of different things. My requisites above are mostly wishlist and not something which needs to be followed 100%. Maybe the "perfect" match doesn't exist at all really.

I'd be looking into a cherry pick from Heroquest ( I assume you know the Euro HQ is a watered down version of the North American rules?), Advanced Heroquest and WHQ.

The rules and tiles for all are all very easy to come by on the internet.

The alpha rules for the manic Kickstarter are available for free. You could easily try it out using heroquest pieces.

I have not played - but I have heard very good things about the Descent series of games. They're available and Fantasy Flight know their onions.

I rather like Heroquest to be honest, but to each his own.

Descent is fun but afaik one player has to GM, nothing to stop the other player controlling multiple characters but it is very much an us against the GM game.

Thanks all. All suggestions and input are welcome.

I might try and get the US Hero Quest rules, I wasn't aware that they were different from the European. Maybe enough to keep gaming HQ a bit more.

I will also take a look at the Mantic rules.

I'm a afan of this system...you can read a couple of play throughs on my blog if you have a minute.

Cheers,

I think I already saw those, but your blog is always worth a re-read

Cool! I never heard of Dungeon Venture, but it sounds like it's exactly what I'm looking for. I recently got a bunch of Reaper Bones figs for my daughters with the idea to use the heroquest rules with printed citadel Dungeon Floor Plans. This is a much better and modern way to show both the fun of miniatures and what dad is doing in his man-cave.
If the floorplans are compatable with the D&D master floor plan set whatsit it would be even better and I might get a box of that too.

The box contains dozens of paper miniatures on plastic stands. It looks like it was designed to play with real (28mm?) mini's. Do you think it wouldn't work?

No, I am more concerned if the paper miniatures might be out of scale with 28mm miniatures, so the rest of the content of the box would not work for 28mm minitures.

If say the paper miniatures are more 20mm scale, then the tiles and furniture would probably not work for 28mm miniatures.

I would not really want to play with paper miniatures, so if I bought this game I would like to use 28mm miniatures instead.

I like HQ too. But then there's sentimental attachment since it was what got me into the hobby. Granted it needs some work to make it suitable for adults, Ye Olde Inn forum has some good tips and there are some 'house rules' on my blog from when we ran the campaign. Not tried any of the others except AHQ.

My girlfriend really enjoys playing the modern D&D boardgames with me. Personally i would prefer heroquest or advanced HQ but she likes co-op games.

I bought Dungeon Venture today. The squares are 2,50cm. Here a pic with Reaper figs:

The board is modular so quite versatile. Rules appear very simple at 1st sight, with only a few monster types.
