Different Scales?

Afternoon folks,

Has anyone tried playing Warhammer in scales other than 28mm?

If so, what have you done with the movement/shooting distances? Have you kept it the same or scaled it appropriately (e.g. reduced M4 to M2 for 15mm models or increased M4 to M8 for 54mm models)?

I am thinking of playing Warhammer with some 90mm toy soldiers, and I'm wondering whether or not to triple the distance (e.g. M4 to M12) to reflect the fact that the models are three times the size of a standard Citadel model, or just to keep it the same but treat all the models as Giants.

I've not tried different scales, but I think scaling movement and ranges is going to be dependent upon the space you have available to play. If your playing in the back garden and can scale up the table as it were, then I'd say go for it.

For warbands and skirmish games I'd say go for it, though not sure how well a 3000pt (even a 3rd ed 3000pt) army is going to work. I'd like to see pictures! Have you seen the large scale Necromunda pictures? They were floating on Faceache a while ago but can't find them on a quick search of Google.

I bought a couple of units of 15mm Demonworld models to use for WHFB scaled down. The idea was to just halve distances and base sizes. Sadly, I gave up when 10mm bases for the dwarfs I started with just seemed too small to assemble as a unit.

That said, I've seen an Empire army done with 15mm Demonworld models. As far as I can remember, the bases were halved.

Cool mate! I like your thoughts on 1/2" bases for 15mm models. I would get a sign-writer to cut up some acrylic in bulk (which would be a tiny job to them) rather than cut my own, though!

Incidentally, I was looking at 10mm and 18mm fantasy models from Eureka Miniatures earlier today and wondering what base sizes would look good.... Too many scales!

This is something I have also been toying with - reduce the scale and increase the fun... well they're quicker to paint at least. You get a lot more models for your money but lose, to some extent, that personal feel that the larger models have.

To this end I decided to start with a 15mm Tolkeinesque mounted, human army with some spearman/archer units attached, just to see how they'd look. Only got a handful of horsemen painted so far but stalled on the basing as well! Simultaneously I decided I'd ditch all Imperial measurement systems and use (sensible) metric system. Imperial is obsolete in the 21st century everywhere except America: my tape measures and model-making rule only have millimeters!

Thanks, zoggin-eck. Regarding basing, I started off with a half inch base for infantry as the benchmark and then ran into a bit of a bump with what to do with larger bases. Then I realised that I was essentially scaling the bases down with each 5mm on a 'proper' base being 1/8 inch for my 15mm figures. Luckily Warbases cut mdf bases to any size you want! It sounds more complicated than it is in reality!

I am definitely going to be playing skirmish rather than mass battles. I'm talking about 3-6 troops per side, all on round bases, working as individuals rather than regiments, probably between 20-100 points per side. My table, due to the limitations of space in my home, is 3' x 3', so there's not much room to move, but as the number of models is reduced this isn't as much of a problem as you might think.

If I ever manage to pull off a game, I'll be sure to take some pix!
