Deathworld Flora and Fauna: Ambull 30/08/14

Re: Deathworld Flora and Fauna: Jungle Finished 21/02/14

I think we need to organise an oldhammer day trip, if we hire an old minibus we could pack it full of enthusiastic gamers and be with you in a day or two. It'd be worth it for trying to have an impromptu game on the ferry alone. Brilliant stuff can't wait to see the first battle reports.

Seriously! Don't be surprised if we turn up at your door!

Re: Deathworld Flora and Fauna: Jungle Finished 21/02/14

Well I'll take it upon myself to invite ye all over to Cheetors place for a game  Hope you don't mind!

Oh yeah, I meant to say wow! Thats just brilliant. I think the next oldhammer ireland branch public participation scenario should be on a death planet or in an aquarium.

Absolutely fantastic stuff! The full effect of everything on the table is truly something to behold. Your scenery and bestiary have definitely inspired me (and many others, I'm sure).

I have really enjoyed reading this thread. Such a wonderful idea and execution of the idea itself. Thank you for sharing this, it is really inspirational!

Those are some mighty fine aliens balls ya got there.
Thanks, much obliged ;)

A small but satisfying contribution today, the often referenced but rarely realised in miniature Rippy-fish:

The models are Fish Swarms from CP Models and cute little things they are too.

The link to the summary of the ongoing project is HERE and the link to the post about the Rippy-fish is HERE.

Thanks for looking :)

That river looks pretty cool too.

Nice choice, I didn't know of these minis. You keep on setting the bar quite high!

Thanks. They are cute little sculpts that were fun to paint.

Thats a prepainted, ready to go straight out of the box Pegasus Hobbies River Set. I made a river many years ago and it really was a lot of work for limited gain, so when this project came around I went for the easy option and bought two Pegasus sets: job done.

Its a bit cartoony, so might not look right in a WWII game perhaps, but in a gaudy, aquarium plant filled Deathworld its just dandy.

Thanks Suber. CP Models have all sorts of cool little things in their ranges. These models are in the Fantasy section, but there are things suitable for 40k in their Horror, Fantasy and other sections in addition to their Sci-fi category.

Inspired by some chat about the Rippy-fish that I added to this project, yesterday I decided to tackle the Ambull that I picked up earlier this year.

Its a funny looking old model, but as one of the only official Rogue Trader era Wandering Monster types, it was satisfying to get it painted. The Ambull, Catachan Devil and Ctheallean Cudbear are the Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman of the RT era Deathworld as far as I am concerned, so it was cool to get this guy painted.

Comments and criticisms all welcome :)

Excellent entry once again. I particularly like one thing which is highlighted by yours pics and that I had not considered before, it's the fact that the ambull feels right in all sorts of settings, as a space hulk parasite or space travelling ET, but also as a bio-engineered monster meant to fight in savage arenas against other bio-tech monsters, OR as the alpha predator in the jungle of a wild planet (many more examples of course).

I think your colourscheme helps a lot in that aspect whereas a purely dark brownish style (à la Giger's Alien) or a vivid and bright coloured (think all pink or all blue) could have made him look a bit too fantasy.

Can't wait to work on Diego's now. HURRY UP DIEGO !

I know what you mean. I was slightly surprised that the ambull looked as appropriate as it did in both the indoor terrain and the jungle. The Cudbear or Catachan Devil would not look as appropriate in the tech setting.

There is a subtle difference in the appropriate palettes for Fantasy figures and Science Fantasy figures I think. An example might be to compare the inhabitants of Jabbas Palace with the inhabitants of the Troll Market in Hellboy II. When I paint a fantasy figure for use in a sci-fi setting try to avoid having it look too much like it came straight from the D&D Monster Manual. I dont always succeed, but I do try to make sure that my monsters look like space monsters :)

Diegos Ambull will be joining this one as soon as I get it. I can see a scenario - a love story in fact - where the two animals are entering rutting season. Ambull courtship and mating procedures being what they are ("Retreat to a safe distance! Get out of there Johnson, duck... oh Jesus... Retreeeat!" ) Im guessing that a pair of bolter proof monsters mating in the middle of the table might cause disruption to Inquisitor Verhoevens plans. And be amusing of course.

Wonderful, I'm sure I read somewhere that ambulls in Rutt are trying to breed with anything they encounter because their urge to mate is just that strong. (or maybe I just made that up because I'm twisted and would like to see some unfortunate space adventurers mating with Ambull willing to share their excess of gonads...)

I agree with your statement on painting differently depending on the setting, even though uncounsciously, I do it too as most of us.

All fabulous models, as many others have said. I love your deathworld fauna with the coffee mug. (We too are fauna, after all, and I'm guessing he's a native, given his nonchalant attitude about all the big things.)

Also, I'm officially jealous of the cats and the EM4 guy in the suit and bowler. I wanted that mini, but I can't find him anymore. EM4 says he's not in stock and I've had no luck on e-bay. Will try again later. Excellent stuff all, Cheetor. I bought my own Ramshackle miniatures largely on the power of your reviews. Hoping I can spread the love.

I cant help you with that cats Im afraid as I have traded away all of my spares, however when it come to Bowler hat and Tattered Morning Suit gentleman try an affilaite of EM4, Forlorn Hope. They are good guys to deal with, I can vouch for them :)

I am a fan of Ramshackle Miniatures. Loads of charm.

Thank you! Excellent suggestion. One day I will start my own deathworld flora and fauna project. (I picked up the sand maggot from Ramshackle for such a purpose. Keep eying Ambulls and related fantasy beasties.)

That's possibly the most characterful ambull I've ever seen. Looks incredible. So much regretting not getting one when they were on the shelves :/
