Daemonic Legions

i`ve had the Realm of Chaos books since they were first issued but have never played a full Daemonic legion battle, What are the experiences of others? Were there just too many rules? It seems like keeping track of magic and enhanced saves would be very time consuming.

Having only recently obtained a copy - no real experience of playing the game and haven't seen any articles or blog posts relating to such but I'm will ing to give them a try, as I have the models and figures :o  :o - how about we have a chat at BOYL and see what we come up with?

Definitely, if the rules are fast enough (or can be suitably streamlined) a Daemonic legion battle would make a great looking game for a future event.

I can make a small khornate legion and a reasonable Slaaneshie legion though not all of it is painted. If I finish all I need to finish for the BFG then I'll look to finish off one or the other of them. May be worth considering doing it for next year with some purpose made chaotic terrain.

I can muster a very small Nurgle "Legion" consisting of a unit of Plague Bearers, two Beasts of Nurgle and a Great Unclean One.

Also depends, if I used 4th Ed Plague Bearers I could probably manage a second unit of Plague Bearers.

if it's for next year's one I could probably manage a larger force but not promising as I was hoping to concentrate on getting the bits together to do the "Revenge of the Doomlord" 4th Ed scenario at BOYL2017 (depending on how well the "Battle for Maugthrond Pass" goes down this year).

I`m up for that, i have viable forces for Nurgle , Khorne and lesser forces for Tzeentch and Slaanesh so would be able to bring stuff for others to use and help balance any shortfalls.
If anyone wants to volunteer to GM, we could even have a 4 way dance.
I have several Balrogs and non aligned daemons which along with a few units of non-canon Daemons could form a 5th force of undivided or be available for "on the day visitors" to use as they see fit.
Also could provide a force of Elementals.
Or go mad and have an invasion of D&D Demons and Devils!

Let the Chaos overflow

ps if you google jprp daemons you will find some of my stuff in largely abandoned threads.

One of the plans I had for next year was also a big high elf Vs Dark elf battle with many daemons on the Dark elf side, possibly even some daemons of law on the high elf side. It would be possible to do both on separate days or combine both into one big mess.

I'd be up for this for a one day game.

Could even possibly be the Battle of the Finuval Plain but done with 3rd Ed rules (which would tone down the Witch King, Tyrion and Teclis to level 25's (?) with magic item equivalents to 4th Ed but 3rd Ed versions)

That may well be what I had in mind...

I thought perhaps the 40K eldar avatar could make an appearance too.

Then I would defo be up for this.

Part of the build up could be a competition for selecting a Witch King on foot conversion (the fluff states he was stood on a hill, makes no reference to being on Dragon (this came later) or being in a chariot as per his 4th edition incarnation that featured in the later 4th Ed Dark Elf Book) and as to who's Tyrion and Teclis we used.

Also present were the Pheonix King (conversion opportunity such as the Witch King) and the Everqueen (5th Ed mini) although it doesn't state if they took part but you'd expect they would if present.

This idea has me very excited but I'd also like to do the same game but in 4th Ed at some point as it's High Elf Book Flufftastic.

I still remember reading the story for the first time in White Dwarf and then re-reading it in my High Elf Army book on a wet afternoon after school sitting in my Dad's reading chair in our utility room and dreaming of having big enough armies to fight the battle with.

This is THE battle that captured my imagination as a kid, such epic proportions and my new army, High Elves, that I had and my Brother did not, were the main protagonists. 4th Ed High Elf Mini's Vs 3rd Ed Marauder Dark Elves is what I see when I close my eyes. Certainly not saying this is what the mini's have to be at all, just that's what I see through my nostalgic haze.

OK, sorry, I'll stop now

Hi,
I have a little experience with Deamonic battle in WFB3 : 6000 vs 6000
rdb21_4_10.JPG

Even if the champions were already created, this battle required several hours of preparation. Chaos attributes must be drawn, profiles changed accordingly, and the many spells and profiles (the Jabberwock, here) still need to be drawn. I wrote two A4 rectos (written small) for each army : a page for demons and an other for mortals. Predicting the difficulty of drawing spells during battle, I had made a list of one hundred level 1 spells prepped for lesser deamons and another one of about twenty spells for Great Deamons. I used a generator of dice available on the web (it's faster than a hand). In the course of battle, there is still much written: the Demonic Power Points, Magic Points, active spells, etc ...

The battle itself was quite pleasant. Since it is impossible to retain all the profiles - modified by the attributes - and the special rules, we spent a moment in books and papers. The most painful point is the management of minor demon spells. The "small" spells that they throw accumulate on them beyond reasonable: "Hands of Fire", "Hand of Death", "Strength of Combat", without mentioning the invocations (hero 5 skeleton, familiar, ..). It's a lot ! As I have assumed, the most useful spells are not the most impressive: the small spells of improvement give good bonuses and can not be canceled, it is also the fate of "Debility" (Battle level 1) which neutralized the Lord of Change once he had exhausted his DPP. In the meantime, lots of projectiles ("Fire Balls", "assault of stones", ...) multiply the minor demons to prematurely toast their DPP because they can be devastating on their Endurances of 3.
Finally, even if he has things well, I do not think WFB3 is the best version to play demonic battles. It's too heavy to handle... I think WFB4 or 5 should do better with a few adaptations.
I did another test where I used only the powers of the Rogue Trader. It simplifies the tables and gives more usable powers (A lot of spells of battle magic are of no very useful).

Thanks so much for a great reply, it sounds like it is very much like i had imagined, the pictures were very welcome too.
I have recently drifted back onto Daemons so this is well timed, at some point i think i will cobble together some guidance for a 6th edition plus version, spells could be carded and simplified.
