Collecting Mounted Orcs & Goblins

Hello everyone,

So after a good long sit down and think about things, I've decided upon a WHFB army to collect in terms of the old codes to play 3rd ed with eventually. Whilst pure Night Goblins have always been close to my heart, I like chariots and pump wagons and want an entirely mounted Orc and Goblin army. Whilst the Warhammer Armies book has pre-requisites for foot models in such a force, bugger that, i can go all mounted in more recent editions and I'm gonna go all mounted with this. It'll be fun. In any case, taking a page out of Chico's book, I'd like to draw on everyone's extensive knowledge here when it comes to collecting the older citadel/marauder mounted orcs and goblins.

Is there a complete compiled Citadel/Marauder Mounted Orc & Goblin collecting list?
What Citadel/Marauder Mounted Orc & Goblin ranges are there?
What are the hardest most sought after pieces?
What sort of prices am I expecting to have to pay?
Anything else I need to know before diving in?

I do currently own the Goblin King's Battle Chariot from the Machineries of Destruction range (in its' original box too) {gotta love a 1358 point model where the Demon Boar they've turned around and stated "Rather than work out his points we have allotted a value of 1000 points to represent this creature's comprehensive range of powers (this includes the driver)"}.

Cheers everyone,

Auretious Taak.

Edit: P.S. If anyone has any mounted orcs & Goblins for trade or sale, shoot me a pm. I don't have a lot of older models for trade unfortunately, quite a mass of more recent stuff, not just GW too,a sk and I'll see what there is.

This is a very interesting list of questions...about a subject close to my heart...I love the variety of models available from the classic period. I'm not aware of any "mounted Orc and Goblin collecting guide"...so lets make one! 8-)

Like that start of any good guide about collecting classic minis one must spend some time trawling around on Stuff of Legends...Let see what we can find. 8-)

I guess I'll first define what we are looking for. I will try to include as many slotta era mounted Orcs/Goblins/Snotlings as possible....and mounts will range from wolfs, boars, spiders, chariots, and machines (pump wagon). I will not include characters mounted on monsters like wyverns etc. This can be added later if you want. All will date from the 3rd edition or earlier...so that will include marauder mounted troops as well (some folks don't consider Marauder minis to have the same character as the old citadel ones but you cannot deny that they date to right period).

Lets start with Goblin Wolf Riders:

You've got to start with the Kevin Adams Wolf riders from the 80's...these are not too difficult to find though you will pay in the range of $10 each.

Marauder also has a very extensive range of Wold riders...some of these are quite hard to find...(there are 6 sculpts that I have been looking for for 3 years now without luck... ) They do not seems to be quite as popular as the Citadel ones above...but I love them. I think you can pick these up in the $8-10 range when you see them.

Sadly the catalog only has these line drawing of the figures...if you want to see actual models check out this page on the CCM wiki:http://www.collecting-citadel-miniatures.com/wiki/index.php/Goblins_-_Marauder_MM3x#MM32.2F2_Goblin_Wolf_Riders

Here is an actual photo of the mounted goblin hero...as well as the boar rider general from marauder. These fetch a bit more...in the $12 range...and are hard to find with the back banners and proper mounts sometimes.

This is a good transition into the Orc Boar riders...once again we should start with start with Kev Adam's Gruntas and Snortas...quite in demand these days...often going for more than $10 each...some in the $15 range. These appear on eBay with some frequency...but obtaining a complete collection can take some time and $.

Once again Marauder also has a fair number of different rider sculpts...these come up fairly often and fetch from $8-10 each. Some of these are more difficult to find than others....at least for me... I have all but one of them at this point.

Please be aware that there are six uncataloged rider variant for these as well. They can be seen here on the CCM wiki (at the bottom):
http://www.collecting-citadel-miniature ... s_-_MM22/4

We should also put the first couple of spider riding goblins produced for warhammer...these again come from Marauder...I'm honestly not sure what the going rate for these is right now.

OK that does it for a quick search of Cavalry Models...though I'm sure folks will be along to add more that I'm missing.

Cheers for now!

Right carry on then! Lets look at Chariots.

We have a great example of Bob Olley's skills presented with his Goblin Chariot. These are fairly rare and if intact can fetch $20 or more...though occasionally one goes unnoticed for less... ;)

Then we have the Goblin Kings Chariot which you already have. Not super rare but again sells for north of $20

Then we have the two Goblin Battle Chariots...these are THE quintessential Goblin Chariots of the era IMO. these are quite difficult to find in my experience and again sell for a more than $20 when you see them. (if anyone has one to sell please contact me!!!)

Marauder also produced a couple of chariots..first the Goblin one. This shows up on eBay with some frequency and can be had for about $15 at the moment.

Marauder's Orc Battle Chariot is interesting because it is pulled by wolfs instead of Boars...Again these aren't too hard to find...though it took me awhile to get ahold of all three passenger options. $15-20 each

...and while not technically a chariot...this is a good place to put the First Snotling pump wagon...a classic model that sells for $25ish if complete.

So...thats all I have for now...I'm sure others will be able to fill in some gaps.

Cheers,

Geez Blue... talk about a thorough answer!

So, erm, i was wondering if anyone knows if there is a definitive guide to nude pics of Anne Hathaway... Blue?

It should be added that Kev Adams has done very similar sculpts fir some other companies, many still in production. If they're not not cheaper, they're at least easier to get a hold of.

Thanks, that's a great start Blue in TV!

Okay, I'll add to this then with the Chronicle Orcs by Nick Lund (as per the stuff of legends, Chronicle was bought by citadel who started selling nick lund stuff for a time before passing the license onto grenadier, woo learning more about the old codes!):

I should mention that I'll include Giants in the army because Giants are cool and can keep up. Also that the only 2 giants I own are Marauder Giants, 1 I acquired froma friend with some 6th ed plastic orcs and an orc warboss on wyvern and the other like 15 years ago early in high school whom I painted in a red yellow and red colour scheme and named 'Cragbrow Irontop' who has killed quite a tally of Dwarfs over the years. Oh to jump up and down and fall over like a boss!

Except it posts only to the UK...

Here's a new set of questions:

What key words do people use on ebay when doing searches?

I used:

Alongside 'Goblin Chariot' or 'Orc Chariot' I had 'Vintage', 'OOP', 'Rarer', '1980's'. The same with 'Mounted Orc' and 'Mounted Goblin' or just plain '1980's Orc' and '1980's Goblin'.

Old Grenadier, still available from Forlorn Hope Games (or EM4 and Mirliton)

Not sure if this is an old Grenadier mini or something newer, but they're rather nice

The amazing goblin war-giant, Mirliton:

Old Grenadier classic. Can be found cheaper 2nd hand but usually not with all the bits.

More old Grenadier

Might continue with more current stuff later, now I need to go work on our guest room in the basement... highly hobby related, as it will allow me to repossess my man-cave, where there's currently a lot of furniture and junk from the old guest room.

I'm like 99% sure I've just acquired a BN1 Goblin Kings Chariot sans the driver (but the goblin king model is there all good!):

Thanks to Orlygg's blog, there is a flyer pic:

And a painted pic minus crew:

as part of his very educational article on all things machineries of destruction from the 1980's:

When it arrives in the post, I'll do pics and post them up. Also, my Great Spined Dragon arrived in the post today. Wow is that an amazingly marvellous model...now to find a suitable Orc to ride it...

I can confirm I have in my possession an BN1 Goblin Warlords Chariot, on the underside of the chariot is the signature 'Rik' confirming it is the Rick Priestly rarity. It's surprisingly small and is missing the driver, but has the Goblin Warlord still. Very nice model. Will edit in some pics later today. :)

Most of the polearm-armed Orcs above will easily fit on a boar as will most of the archers on the mounted warboss page and some of the Orcs with two hand-weapons as well.

Here's my unpainted motley crew,
