Bugs Undead (Pic heavy)

I'm back from my hols and I just noticed this thread had some new posts on it. Here's a blurry shot of some finished zombie cavalry:

And a painting guide

@Mutantdale - That sounds like a plan. I still haven't settled on my army list yet though and I'm trying to paint things that I think might be useful as opposed to what might actually be useful. ;) I'll have to have a think. I'm really wanting to build up two or three metal chariots but I seriously need to pull my finger out to get those done in time!

@Erny - Good to see more oldschool zombies! Trust me you can never have enough of them. :)

@Chico - I'll be updating it soon. Ish. I'm very slowely working on another five cavalry. They should be finished in the next week or so then it's onto the Skull Chuckers which Erny will love so much.

If people want my recipes for how I'm painting I'm happy to share. How I paint my zombies was actually nabbed from a White Dwarf article a number of years ago.

Great zombie horses you got there Bug I will be checking out the blog soon.. Details on the zombies or even the white dwarf number would be great.

I was thinking of painting some of mine or possibly a metal chariot or 2 or some skull chukkas up next.. let me know what you decide and I will go for the other or even something different entirely if you need. I have pretty much at least 1 of each unit now :)

I honestly can't remember the WD number. It was about 6-12 months before the GIANT! issue, the issue that made me cancel my subscription (I've not read a new issue since!).

I paint my zombies like this, just bear in mind that at some stages they will look very messy but it all works out in the end:

Painting the skin

1. Black basecoat
2. Bleached bone
3. Black ink wash
4. Green ink wash
5. Bleached bone drybrush a couple of times
6. Brown ink wash
7. Very light bleached bone drybrush

Wounds

1. Snakebite leather
2. Red ink wash a couple of times. I'd be tempted to change this to how I paint wounds on my zombie cavalry.

Intestines and other bits of offal

1. A mix of Red gore 80% Skull White 20%
2. A mix of Red gore 60% Skull White 40%
3. Red ink wash

That's it! Paint the bone and clothing however you like.

I'd say build your chariots because I can see that taking me 2-4 days of filing and greenstuffing and a good 2-4 days to paint them (I paint bone very slowly). If you've got anything painted do post some pics, I love seeing how other people paint these figures. :)

If only those Cav wasn't so expensive/hard to track down

The cavalry are shockingly overpriced on ebay. There's no way I'd pay an average of £15+ a model. Some riders demand quite a high price whereas some are worth a couple of quid, so you can pick up certain combinations of horse and rider for the £6 mark.

There are quite a few subtle variations with the horses, both skeletal and zombie, which, again, demand different prices. The variations being initially most of the horses came in two parts, this was changed at some point, I suspect, to make casting easier and to reduce the size of the mold. Also some horses come with arrows sticking through them and later on they don't. I was lucky that I bought some of my cavalry as a kid and when I bought the rest on ebay I averaged around £6 for the horse and rider combined but that was years ago. I've snagged a few horses and riders as part of bundles which made them work out at £1 each but that was just luck!

My recommendation is if you can buy horses and riders for a good price separately (not ebay buy it now prices) you'll get some with a bit of time. :)

Aww man horses with arrows sticking out... Now I have to add more of these to my want list.

Do you have any pics (or any doubles)..

Thanks for the tutorial I will try it out on a few. I am looking at painting 40+ 3rd ed slotta zombies on and off alongside my August painting challenge but..
I may also do a chariot or 2. I need to greenstuff where the feet attach. I can't decide if I am going to permanently fix them in or magnetise all the crew so I can pick and choose..

I have just painted up my grenadier skelly on pterodactyl not sure if we can use him or not but I liked the mini. Pics will be up on the blog at the weekend if I get chance.

Any decisions on what you are doing next? Finishing up the rest of the riders or something else..

I'll take some photos at some point, hopefully over the weekend. Unfortunately, I don't have any spare 3rd edition cavalry.

It's a very quick method to get a decent rotting zombie look. I had to paint 100 of them over a weekend for a tournament and I was surprised at how well they turned out.

I did think about doing the same but I was put off by how fiddly it was going to be. Do let me know how it works out. :)

I'm looking forward to seeing the blog! :)

I'll be finishing up the remaining cavalry then I'll be working on the skull chuckers. I keep thinking I should just paint up 10 Mummies as that would save me bags of time! ;)

I'm really not fond of the original plastic skeleton horses, I think it's the lack of barding on them. The 3rd edition metal horses and riders are actually, on the whole, really great but you do need to mix and match the right rider to the right horse and not mind greenstuffing gaps or sculpting robes over the gaps inbetween the rider and the horse. The metal skeleton horses are also very nice but I find them mindnumbing to paint.

I have to confess that I do really like the new GW plastic cavalry. In fact, I think the GW plastic skeletons, Grave Guard and cavalry in their current range are all really great because they're very oldhammery in look. Although they're too expensive for me mind to buy a couple of boxes on a whim. The rest of the range is action figure pish though.
