I don't know. I'd be inclined to believe it's an old trade route leading to ancient dwarven fortresses in those northern mountains. And perhaps other human tribes as well.
There are even two Tilean explorers who managed to travel this route and reach Cathay... Hats off to Ricco and Robbio !

I'll have to go and dig it out and wouldn't want to spoil too much those that haven't played, but doesn't some of Something Rotten in Kislev end up the other side of the mountains? Suggesting maybe at least at that point in Warhammer there were communities out that way. Later doesn't most of that bit of the Old World end up being Chaos Dwarf lands?

yes, the farside colonies. further expanded in tim eccles 'wheatland colonies' sourcebook and campaign. sadly only the first part saw print and hogdhead publishing handed back the license for wfrp and stopped holding gw's lawyers at bay.

Had a look at my copy and trust me, the picture you posted on previous page is probably the best you'll ever get of this particular map.
It's not just a small picture with a lot going on with all the trade routes, but it's also rather low quality. Text in general is blurry and some of it is outright unreadable, just like in your picture. To give you an idea here's some close-ups:
