Bob Olley Essex minis

I noticed that Essex minis were having a bit of a sale on their fantasy ranges, many of which were sculpted by Bob Olley back in the 80's, now some of them look dated, but being an Olley fan I'm tempted to order a few, particularly the mounted skellies and this guy

who looks friggin awesome, quite frankly

Anyone have any idea of the scale? I know a lot of the essex minis suffer from oversized heads, but would they be suitable as chaos dwarves?

Well that is a coincidence. I just came across that guy today too, and was wondering the same thing! It really does look like an excellent miniature doesnt it. aBob Olley classic.

I was wondering about the mounted chaos knights with the animal heads. I imagine they would be a bit on the small side for my chaos stuff but not sure.

well, once again my lack of will power let me down, I ordered him and a couple of the mounted skeletons and a trio of chaos dwarves tonight, i'll post some scale comparison pics when they arrive for you.

I've got a few of the Chaos Dwarfs; they seem to scale with 80s Citadel, might be a bit smaller than many modern models. As you say, Essex heads tend to be big, but what the hey, they're dwarfs. Mind you, I am easy to please about scaling in general.

Order arrived, sadly they sent me the wrong wizard :(
I got the dwarf wizard with owl instead, which really is rather nice though. As well as a couple of mounted undead, well, one skeleton anyway and a mounted lichmaster, who I've kinda fallen in love with, he's a great mini, I can't recommend him enough to iron claw fans. I'm very much relieved as I ordered him blind.
I'll post a few pics when I get home

Q111 Liche master mini, love this guy

and Q102 chaos dwarves with joe bugman for comparison (these minis work out at £1:25 each)

next to no mould lines on the minis, and aside from the mix-up with my order, which I'm waiting on a reply from them regarding, the service was good, I'll definitely be ordering some more of this range.

Essex really need to put the pics of these minis on the website. There are obviously some great minis in the range, as well as some quite dodgy ones, but it is hard to know which is which when most of them dont have pics.

Thanks for sharing these scale comparisons.

Wow, they're really great models - a risk that was worth taking and I reckon a fair few will follow suit. Granted their prices are good enough that its not a huge risk but the lack of photos on their site has put me off ordering anything from them over the last few years.

Now let's see some paint on those chaotic dwarves asap

Those are quite nice -- I have a few already, but if they're on sale ...

... don't suppose you have a shot of the one with the owl?

Someone should start a feature on great figures that aren't properly advertised. Those Olley models are little curlicued gems.

Decided to start with the lich master, went with a zenithal highlight to help guide my painting, probably wise under the circumstances.
The level of detail is quite intimidating, even compared to the Olley Sidhe to the left.

Wow, that Lich Master is an amazing sculpt!

I can't see him on the website, nor the first figure you posted a pic of, and I must have both! Any idea what they're listed as?

Thanks! Don't know how you found Q111, it doesn't seem to be anywhere in the 28mm Fantasy lists, but good spot! I wonder what other treasures are hidden on Essex's frankly rubbish webshop...

Y'know, I came across somethign uncannily like this as Ral Partha, or maybe Reaper minis, somewhere the other day - perhaps ebay, perhaps not - and wondered where I'd seen it before. It was titled something like "The Lair of the Balrog", or another not quite 'accurate' name, since its actually a dragon.

Then again I could be wrong :?

Well, the eyes didn't match one another, so I didn't try and hide it.
I've decided to call him Morti Fellman (ba-dum-tish)
