Black Gem of Gnar

Galadrin

Vassal
I cannot for the life of me find this card. I am looking through my unpunched Battle Magic and Arcane Magic box sets (I bought them shrink wrapped, so I know they are complete) and it is not in either of them. I know it wasn't one of the base magic items that came in the starter box, so where on earth is this card? It shows up in the Arcane Magic miscellaneous magic items summary, so I know it existed in 4th Edition, but where the card was actually printed is beyond me...

Anyone have any clues?

Oh good lord, I found it on a sheet in Arcane Magic that was otherwise devoted to spells (so I had overlooked it). That, after digging through Battle and Arcane Magic (three times each), Chronicles of War and the Chaos box set! GW really did like to spread their special rules and items over dozens of supplements, didn't they...?

Aye, easy money.

'Though I'm loathe to double-post on an inert forum, the Black Gem of Gnar makes me feel that way.
Got to be tiresome for like a Bloodthirster to spend half its favourite past-time frozen in place by whatever champion of whoever's army gets to him first.

I always strive for the obscure items to see some use in my games, but there's never a time where certain ones don't make sense.

People moan and complain about the Black Gem of Gnar these days when they want to cast aspersions on 4th/5th edition. Ironically, these are often the same people that complain about "Herohammer," when Lords with the Hydra Blade and a Potion of Strength ruled the day. Yet everything in Herohammer had a counter, and the Black Gem was the premier counter to an overtooled Lord. What, you spent half your army points on a single character? Not my fault if he is frozen in time by turn 2! Warhammer 40k had an equally effective solution—the Vortex Grenade. Items like these allowed you to have fun with Herohammer without letting it get too beardy (there's a phrase you don't hear much anymore!).

I really like the elegant play and counter-play of the lists. I don't really encounter super characters in the edition nowadays...although one guy does run an Orclord with Necromancy Crown, Morgor the Mangler and he's riding a Hydra to boot.
He just isn't encountered, much, though. Easy to just walk around him.

Just bring a Black Gem of Gnar card to your next game and slap it down on the table! Boom, no Morgor!

That... Is a good question. Looking at the wording of the card, my guess is that the second BGoG would have to be dispelled first, then the original would have to be dispelled.

I found the BGoG was a really fun toy. Never got to use it on a Bloodthirster though. I think the best I managed was holding up Tyrion (not Lannister) for a game. Most of the time the uber killy lord of multiple deaths managed to avoid my BGoG even when we played closed list. Maybe it was all about the arrogant swagger of by skavenslave unit belting towards the dragon riding High Elf that gave the game away. :(
