Best edition of Warhammer??

Dragon Rampant is the new Warhammer!

Sort of. In terms of playing with children it has to be the way to go. Throw a bucket of dice count hits and remove figures. Simples! No tables to look up, no fancy movement, no wheeling, formations, facing. It is all totally straightforward but written in a humerous style reminiscent of early Warhammer. Totally adaptable for fielding almost any of your old lead and great fun to play and takes less than 6 hours to resolve 3 turns.

I like 2nd, but I prefer 3rd. It just feels more complete to me, with great siege rules (really designed for campaign play), more detailed maneuvering rules and more options in general. If you don't want the detail cranked up to 11, then 2e is probably fine. I also didn't like the combat routing rules where troops tended to flee after their first loss (i.e., they flee after the first round of combat a lot more often than they stay). Warhammer 3rd Edition really let's you get "stuck in"... It makes for a longer game, but somehow more satisfying.

To be honest, though, if you just want a faster system, then I would actually suggest 4e over 2e. The magic rules with the cards are terrific fun and you get the great army books.

I bought editions 1-6 as they came out.
I have always thought that 2nd edition represented the best rule set, since they were nicely refined through playtesting by that point, but that Rogue Trader offered the most, by far, in terms of sheer imagination and inspiration. They stripped away much of the scenarios and background material of Rogue Trader to make the later editions more streamlined - to their detriment, in my opinion, since this kind of gaming enjoyment is driven primarily by imagination.
3rd ed and after began introducing what I perceived as pointless changes for done merely for the sake of putting out a new edition, GW knowing that their entire customer base would run out and buy it...
So toward the mid 90's I began noticing that there were more of what appeared to be marketing-based rules decisions creeping in, to encourage players to phase out older things and buy new things. It was the GW turning point for me. Once I realised that I began backing away...

Back in '87 a box of 30 plastic marines was $25. Now you get 10 brand new plastic marines for $120... Oh dear...
