Battle of Maugthrond Pass

Ok, for those of you I have mentioned this to before, and to those of you who have read my blog, will know I'm a little obsessed with the 4th edition boxed set scenario "The Battle of Maugthrond Pass".

Yes, I know it's 4th and that it's not cool or trendy on the Oldhammer community to love anything after 3rd BUT I have lots of lovely memories growing up playing 4th with my Brother and my friends.

I'd really love to run the scenario at BOYL 2015 (yes, planning well in advance) but obviously I don't know if there is a large appetite for it.

I know most of you will be playing with boats over the weekend but I see it as a way of easing into the Sunday morning and chasing away the alcohol fumes that linger from the excesses of the night before.

If I can get at least two people interested and a table I'll run it as GM (with minis, not card templates).

So, hands up who's willing to admit they still have a soft spot for 4th and want to take part (queue the tumble weeds and a general lack of response......).

:?

With the cardboard Grom?

I started with 3rd, but 4th edition is when I really started to get into playing Warhammer. Still many fond memories, right here.

I'm going to be doing other stuff but would love to see this scenario played out - I'm of a similar vintage to Chaoschild and I reckon I could even work up a bit of nostalgia for the cardboard Grom and Elf Griffin Rider even though I was very dismissive of them even when it first came out!

How's about I bring the cardboard bits and have them scattered around the sides of the table for nostalgia's sake but use the actual miniatures to fight the scenario?

I'll also be replacing all of the plastics with their lead counterparts (pre-4th edition in the case of the Gobbo units).

Hey, I have nothing but love for 4th/5th ed, 5th ed was how I got into the hobby. It's true that after a while I did get frustrated about the predominance of heroes (esp special characters) which was a small part of what led to me leaving the hobby. Personally if I was playing with those rulesets again I would need to tone down the influence of heroes and magic items to let regiments come a bit more to the fore. But many would say that would destroy precisely the appeal of those editions!

if you're gaming with like minded individuals then that'd probaly happen anyway.

For example, back in the day I rarely made use of Champions, it was always Heroes as unit leaders, Champions were for if I just wanted to squeeze the points, I saw it as a let down using them.

Now when I play those editions I make full use of Champions as they should be.

*shiver*

Might as well come out of the closet now that everyone else is out...

You may have noticed my predilection with Grom - spawned really from my desire to return to Mauthrond pass and later the complete assault on whatever the place is the elves live. I've been quietly collecting 4th ed. elves and goblins to do just what you've described.

So, I'd happily participate in this one!

Excellent, I take it you're plumping for the rotund Gobbo then?

I've always fancied doing a Grom's invasion campaign sometime, even if it were just a narative one, maybe BOYL 2016 (far too much going at the 15 already to squeeze it in) over three days would work although obviously other gaming meets/weekenders would suffice too.

Nothing to be ashamed of either, the age we guys are all orbiting means most of us must of had a fair chunk of our gaming youth spent on 4th.

Also, I should say I'm a big fan of 4th/5th ed High Elves. They will always be there in my Elven army. Rehabiliating my chariots from that era is one of the things very high up on my list of priorities, and further down is stripping and repainting those beloved plasticc spearmen from the box set.

I don't mind, really, but if no-one is pressing, then I'll happily command the little bugger...

My own mission for the year. It just so happens that this mission ties in nicely with get Maugthrond done.

Possibly that would make two Elf Generals for a narative campaign dealing with Grom's exploits in Ulthuan, and there are a number of Orcish generals out these to side up with Gaj . Obviously you could only have Eltharion, Grom and Blacktooth on one battlefield at the time but overall in the campaign you couldn't have them on the same battlefield too often, possibly only at Maugthrond (if that game formed a part of the campaign) and a big one in Tor Yvresse.

I think if I did go down that route it would maybe mean a year of modelling up Elven scenery. It'd be very cool but possibly a lot of work which is why I've always put it off before but I reckon I'm old enough and ugly enough to give it a go.
