I've been looking at the rules for Monstrous/Ethereal/Chaotic Hosts in 3rd Ed to see how they work. Mostly because I was curious about taking C34 Giant Bats as part of a Monstrous Host with Undead. At 2pts each and Ld 4, the Bats are probably an issue unto themselves. But that prompted me into looking at the actual costs of taking a Host.
As an example if you're playing Wood Elves and you want to take 2 Eagles at 75 points each, you need to either:
Points costs for a Chaotic Host are double the above, although there's less chaff available and more Manticores/Griffons/etc. The rules for Ethereal Hosts are a little different and for an Undead Army to bind Ethereal units that won't simply leave after any combat, would cost 255 points in Necromancers (3x Level 10). Who would then have no Magic Points for spells.
The rules for Wizards wearing Armour are slightly different to other editions (where they can't cast at all, unless wearing Chaos Armour). So my brief thought of using Vampires wearing Armour to do the Binding doesn't necessarily get you ahead.
Is it a case of go big on Host cost or go home? And just using the Monstrous/Chaotic Host to take a Dragon or say three Hydras?

- Take a Level 5 Wizard at 78 points in order to bind the Host. The wizard will then have no Magic Points left for spells and the Host will leave after the first combat.
- Take a Level 10 Wizard at 118 points in order to bind the Host. The wizard will then have no Magic Points left for spells and the Host will have a 50% chance of leaving after any combat.
