And Then Suddenly The Figure Came Alive

May have to try this technique too some day! I am a clumsy painter though, would hate to spend time completing one feature to end up accidentally blobbing paint on their nose or letting too heavily diluted paint run into eye sockets!

Oh I do that.
I find that varnishing the bits you have done and then moving makes cleaning spills easier.

So once the faces are done they get varnished.
If / When I get some other paint on the face a quick wipe with a clean wet brush will remove any errors.

I tend to do faces a little later in the process, since I layer paint on the largest surfaces so recklessly. (The process inevitably gets at least a little bit of paint on adjacent smaller areas, so I do them later.) That said, yeah, the face really pulls a good miniature together. Mine aren't remotely as good as yours, or some other folks on this forum, but even so, I really enjoy the faces of a good, hand sculpted model.

And Padre, I love your practical effects. They're brilliant. I've done some blue screen for my space ships, and a couple of times for bridge shots, but your real interiors with real stuff and really making the miniatures look like they're sitting at a table or what have you . . . it's brilliant. No green screen could ever equal that. I admire the absolute crap out of it, and I need to do a little more of it with my space story.

I generally paint 'inside out' which usually involves skin first. So the face gets done early but not for the same reason. It may not actually get finished until last as eyes are usually the final thing I put in.
