Advice for 1K Dwarf List?

Hey all,

I've not played 3rd ed since I was about 13. I'm hoping to go to BOYL next year with a 1K Dwarf force as part of a painting comp to get us Dad's motivated to pick up a brush at the end of a long day.

Any 1K list advice for an old timer?

So far I've spent about 3 nights just looking at data lists and not making any decisions. I'm already not painting.

I want to take a swivel gun as I can't be a Dwarf general without any black powder on the field. I don't think the point level lends itself to much more.

I'm tied in to compulsory purchases of Crossbows and Warriors (albeit @ 1/3 the numbers due to the limited points cap)

Are units of 10 worth taking (elites)? At least considering the points level. I'm not convinced, but really want to paint some.

I have enough lead from all unit types to easily field a 1K force. I just don't know what to bring on the day. I prefer fluffier lists, but I'd like to offer a competitive game.

Any advice from any Dwarf generals greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
AB

If you want black powder a cannon is only about 60 points or go for some Thunderers.

If you can pick up up copy of White Dwarf 144 (I think it's 144) then there is a 1k Dark Elf Army that inspired the idea. Everyone will have small units, 10 should be adequate, if not go for 12 and you get 3 ranks of 4.

Remember, your units may be smaller but so will missle units firing at you so smaller units aren't such an issue, it all comes down to scale.

I'd decide on a theme for the army, then build the army around that concept, maybe...

* bunch of prospectors hunting for gold (lots of sappers, some hastily constructed war machines a merchant-lord and some bodyguards)
* village milita (lots of gnomes with some local dwarven "heroes")
* lost hunting party (lots of crossbows, one high level lord)
* honour guard for a Spell Smith returning from a quest to retrieve an ancient lost dwarven artefact (elites, thunderers, cannon all brightly arrayed in gold and iron)
* Giant-slayer and his entourage of kamikaze dwarf fanatics.
* Defenders of the realm (lots of standard troops, no giantslayers, few elite types)
* Random gang of Dwarves heading off to a beer festival (paint up whatever models you like, Bugmans, those drunken dwarves...)

Hope there's some ideas there. Damn, I want to build a dwarven army now

This is something I played recently as a task force sent out to regain a lost mine...

10 Iron Breakers+standard+musician (192pts) Shock troops to storm the mine
10 Quarrellers + 2 handed weapons (150pts) Rangers acting as guides and scouts
20 Warriors +2 handed weapons+Standard (208pts) Miners, armed with pick axes
10 Giant Slayers (80pts) Tagging along looking for a heroic death!
4 Sappers (30pts) Engineers to shore up the mine etc

2 Flame Throwers (112pts) For purging the mine with cleaning fire!

Level 15 hero 128
Heavy Mithrel 58
Pistol 2
Magic Weapon 25
Parasitic Blade 10
Grenades 2

Total 997

Thanks, both. That's part of the problem, I can't commit to a theme. I have enough to recreate most if not all of the suggestions above...

I do like the idea of a prospecting party, bar about 25 marauder miners, i'm shy of any snappers though... That said, I have plenty to trade, just need to strip them and see who needs what :)

But overall, no "you're stupid if you do/don't take" options? RnF are pretty interchangeable, wasn't sure if an army standard was worth the investment at 1K, or how well to equip the General.

Well Parastic Blades are awesome...in any longish games the extra wounds/toughness/strength always come in handy and if the hero hits a large unit with puny stats (eg goblins) take attacks as for every success wound you get a +1 thus you can quickly cut down swathes and get a tool up Dwarf to boot!

Army standards are not worthwhile with dwarfs in a 1K battle...and always take at least one pistol, well because I love dwarfs with pistols

Lol, cheers Pop!

Will take the pistols in due consideration.

I may be other thinking it, just want to make sure I'm not tabled in one turn! Reprogramming my brain from 8th back to 3rd is taking some doing!
