Metal Paints

I like the GW lead belcher colour, it is similar to the Vallejo Chainmail before they changed their recipes a year or so back, but the GW lead belcher is a 'base' rather than a 'layer' as such I find it a bit thick, also it comes in a pot and I prefer bottles.

What do you use as a standard sort of metal?

depends.. a mixture between IronBreaker (citadel), Leadbelcher for dirty metal or Army Painters "Warpaints Fantatic" I think shining Silver, which is in a bottle.. but I can't 100% say for sure due to extremely crap and flaky label.

Of course, that's for silver metals

I like Ammo by MiG "ATOM" paints (not just metallics) and I just got a few of the new Warpaints Fanatic metals like "Oily Steel" and "Plate Metal" and I really like them for armor and swords. I'm waiting for an order to arrive hopefully today to try Vallejo True Metallic Metal for bright Silver and Gold.

I don't have Leadbelcher but Plate Metal is brighter than the old Vallejo Chainmail, and Oily Steel is a nice steel in both color and consistency. It's a little "bluish", I saw it used on "Baron's War" minis on YouTube and decided to buy some. For the ATOM I used Steel and Brass on WW2 subjects, like uniform buttons so it's a tiny amount, I like them better than the older Model Color metallics. I'd say none of the ones I've used are as thick as a GW Base.

I was going to give the Vallejo True Metalics as mentioned by Wilbur a go, those all come with a shade, base and highlight in each range. Generally I use either Vallejo Model Air Steel (71.065) or Vallejo Mecha Dark Steel (69.065) as both (in particular the airbrush paint) flow very nicely (I use them with a brush). I also found the Vallejo Metal Colour Dark Aluminium (77.703) to be nice - the silvers in that range seem to work with a brush okay, but the golds were rubbish unless sprayed, just too thin.

As to how they compare to Lead Beltcher. The Mecha is a bit more of a blue metal, LB seems to be a bit more brown. The Model Air Steel is much lighter.

Not a very good snap, but alongside Vallejo Game Color Chainmail (old formulation):

As I understand it the newer Game Color formulations are much better metallics than the old - one reason I took someone's advice and tried the Mecha and Model Air ones.

wicked thank you. Mecha seems the closest in terms of brightness? although a different hue?

Few more comments on my experience with them: although designed for airbrushing, I use a hairy brush and just take it out of the cap rather than decanting. As it has a thin consistency, it soaks into the body of the brush very easily and seems to last forever! Has a high pigmentation(?) and well ground aluminium, there are no obvious flakes in the mix.
I really should get their gold to try out as have the worst experience with standard gold acrylics… they either separate easily or set too thickly when decanted on a pallet.

I've found the gold in that range is totally rubbish for brushing. I like the silvers however for brushingbthey seem to havemore coverage. Although I've pretty much switched to the Mecha and Model Air ones mentioned for day to day.

I use the cheap craft metallics by DecoArt. Sure they arent the fanciest and are a bit thick but ive had some pretty good results with them. Eventually ill get miniature paints but for a dollar each these are great!

Wonder why it performs badly when the silver metallics are so good?
I've got the gold one. It feels very much like a silver (well it is I guess) with some gold colouring in and when laying it down the silver really just shows through rather than the gold. I was really disappointed given how impressed I'd been with the silver metals. I might get the steel myself now having seen it on yours.

Added the Aluminium and Gold from the Metal Colour range. The gold almost works on a flat bit of card, but meh. I'd not bother with that unless you're airbrushing it onto something.
