Where do people play?

... If you have children that share hobbies that is great for sure.
Mine doesn't.
Think every generation tries to imbue the excitement of their hobbies on their kids at some point. Some stick some don't! My three as happy playing card games (Uno) or board games (Talisman, forbidden island). The eldest lad played WHFB (once! 2e blood bath at orcs drift) when about 13, but him + mates all played WH40K and DnD 5e before and after lock down. Thing with GW is the local franchise WARHAMMER shop did a job on the towns yoof, birthday parties paint and games, etc, that either made them hate 'the model product' ( or love it) with GW hard sell tactics and over competitiveness (must have this codex at +£25 a pop, etc, this singular plastic model at +£40). I think imagination, cooperative gaming and story telling doesn't comes into it anymore: meta gaming, and constant updating and short design life etc. However, my kids have started going to a local tgc (pokemon, magic:the gathering etc) and gaming store which is an independant and total antithesis of GW and it's franchise. Supplies GW products but also has all welcome play nights of bloodbowl etc. And hosts official pokemon events for all ages in the community, feels more inclusive, relaxed without feeling your wallet is watched! Trade nights and side of shop for card, board or wargaming. All things to all men (and women) as it were. I just think kids have more choice and take it or leave it these days plus devices and gaming.

My partner and daughter play board games too, my daughter is obsessed with Pokemon atm and I play the card game with her. Perhaps I should try to get hold of Heroquest to bridge the gap to mini gaming… 😉
I don’t really mind that my partner doesn’t have a big interest in mini wargaming, I am happy that she tolerates me hobbying. She considers it creative and we give each other time to pursue our interests, so I can get away for gaming now and then.

ugh.. never a big fan of the cartoon. started off so-so and I gave up around episode 40 or so. Still got my copy of Pokemon Blue. Been selling off alot of my old cards which were sitting unused in a box for some time (as in going back to the first uk releases) not really the 'big money' the idiots claim which only goes for very rare old cards and hell if I had the money to get some of the rare ones back in the day, but it's helping pay for some nice new figures which are of more use to me ^_^ Though I still got my blinders with one of each card and My old Dragon deck is still in it's bag with my glass tokens (ah, early days of the TCG.. with glass tokens, metal coins etc...)

Well it's all gone weird in Pokemon world, add to that the recent 'rotation' of playable competition cards, the obvious scalpers, grading and dodgy prices (bit like our hobby). 30th anniversary + attention and investment by ppl with crypto funds etc and the criminal fraternity. Spate of break ins to tgc shops up here in the north west recently, or people walking out /shop lifting high value cards. Money in that cardboard! I believe there is a rising market in vintage stuff now....

nah.. some of the card market is kinda dropping right now compared to a few years back but it does go up and down. still, I'm selling them in small batches and are doing well enough to be worth my effort ^_^

Excellent! It's all a bit crazy like I said, mass hysteria, rumours, and top scalping by some idiots! Watched livestream with kids of recent regional in Prague (one of their mates was there playing). Here, they have long (early morning) queues of all ages down the street when they get cards in to our local tgc shop. It's like a hidden community. We live in a rural town but ppl drive here from cities ie Carlisle, Preston etc, even Leeds(!) as they know they get stock and then head off into the Lakes for day. They limit purchases on booster packs & sets and release a day after (usually Saturdays) to help ppl who work in week to get a chance to purchase! Pre-release nights are booked up in advance. I don't think the actual franchise helps-maybe it's corporate cynically intentional-with sporadic release patterns before and after this 'rotation' and less meta-playable cards. Madness like I said and expensive for the kids...

Sounds like some of you good people are into cards, at least tangentially. Since, as Oldhammerers, we're all probably of a certain age group, I assume some of us played a bit of CCGs? Perhaps during the CCG glut of '95?

Does anyone here still play their old CCGs, assuming you did in the 90s?

I was never into Magic, but played a few of the lesser-known gems (Mythos, Illuminati: New World Order, Star Trek (Fleer, NOT Decipher), amongst others). Making solo versions of old CCGs is one of my other gaming passions.

I worked in a games shop that sold all them.
My favourite card game of all time was the original Netrunner. I still have my 2 decks.

a couple I keep my deck but only really play digital versions (back when they used to release video games which copied the rule sets ^_^ like the two GB Pokémon games, or some GBA ones of other games.

but never had alot of people to play with and the whole 'pay to win' is way too more pronounced these days to play much. I do have a few rarer/harder to get ones which.. well. because of that I was never able to really get into them ^_^.

CCG is the new term for TCG? I guess as people are more selling stuff and buying more then trading, it makes sense.

I always thought CCG was an old term?
Yes, it was always CCG back in the 90s heyday. I think the term TCG is more associated with the "second wave" of bestsellers, like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-oh, versus the first wave spawned by Magic: The Gathering.

I never played the second wave games but was heavily into the first wave (card games pulled me and my 40K buddies away from our minis for years). I was reading all the magazines like Scrye, Inquest, and Wizard back then, and the games were nearly always called CCGs.

Think I was already loosing interest in tabletop games when collectable card games were starting to become a thing. Not really sure why they don’t do anything for me still, perhaps if I was a little younger I may have been sucked into them and they would mean more…?

really? I got TCG with that name from the 80s.. Maybe it's a regional thing..

oh well ^_^ It's just we had Trading cards, and stickers which we called that. and some which had games.. and if the games were with the trading cards, it was a trading card game... internet claims 'The genre was introduced with Magic: the Gathering in 1993'.. really? so all them trading card games before that didn't exist? weird... I know alot of them were more basic in a way but.. trading cards you buy in random packs in order to build a deck to play against another person.. where you swap your swaps with another person... sounds like a trading card game to me...

Never a huge huge fan but I got a few I was fine with, just had a problem with ones I was interested in, no-one else was, or just I didn't have anyone to play with. Also, when younger played alot of board games (some which I have no clue where they went which annoys me) and made my own games... did alot of inventing my own games... some pretty fun at the time and always had 'toy' like features which all the good games have..

really need to get back on to a game project I've been working on.. all testing on the first level created for testing the system went well.

Like you never dabbled with Magic, not sure quite why not as I was doing a lot of RPGs around that time so was exposed to it. Did however play a lot of Middle Earth: The Wizards and Battletech. I've still got my Battletech cards, my brother had the Middle Earth cards, final booster pack I got him had the One Ring, which was quite cool. I remember it as being a very good game. For some reason I remember nothing about Battletech, but I guess I'll try it again one day.

The local game store has all their CCG booster packs in this rack behind the counter - I can't help but think of it like "forbidden cigarettes" you have to ask the shop keeper for, I think we're only one step away from them needing to put realistic pictures of wasted away pasty looking gamers on the packs to show what really happens to those who play too much Magic The Gathering :)

there has been a string of local (well, next door town) shops having their front windows smashed and some stuff nicked. well.. Happened to my Local gaming shop (I say my local.. but its in the next town like I said but it's the one I go to all the time). the main things stolen were TCG stuff. They were half tempted to just pack it all in which would have been a major shame.

one problem was also they really wanted to install some safety shutters before that but the local council is all "no, that would ruin the look of the area! we can't have shops protecting themselves like that!".. well.. yeah.. and then look what happens.. right now, thick wood in place of some glass and I think there is some stuff they are looking to do.
