Snow product

Looking for recommendations for snow. Not looking to spend massive amounts as it just a little side project I've started on but at same time always good to have in my basing box. So what do people use ?

Don't think I have really done much snow but Woodland Scenics are normally ones which come up everywhere but they are a USA company which imports some materials and exports products, so prices are probably not great right now and I don't know a UK stockist of their stuff which has some snow stuff in stock. (themodelrailwayshop.co.uk is normally a good place for there stuff in the UK)

MS Paints did a nice video recently on creating snow effects on a board build

I've only done snow once before, so i don't have a wealth of knowledge to offer. but for something quick and cheap. I used an old electric coffee grinder, the kind that fits in your hand, you plop a clear lid on, and pulse the blade to grind. I don't think they're popular anymore since you get a very inconsistent grind, but it made ours a candidate for hobby-time. I put chunks of White craft-foam, the hard crumbly stuff you can get in balls of different sizes, in the grinder and pulsed it till i got the size of flakes i wanted. mix with white acrylic paint and a little PVA to a damp paste, apply with small scultping tool. sprinkle dry grindings on top for a more fresh-snow look.
for denser, hard packed snow add baking soda. It turned out ok, this picture is from a long time ago so not a very clear shot but it does look snowy. Remember to leave some ground bare for good contrast and interesting textures

and I don't know a UK stockist of their stuff
Hobbycraft stores seem to carry some stock if local modelling shops don't. https://www.scalemodelshop.co.uk/sh...-scenics&s=snow&dgwt_wcas=1&post_type=product is another online one I've used that has stock (you can pay the gaming price or the model railway price). https://www.modelscenerysupplies.co.uk/Build-Materials/paints-adhesive-glues/Water-Effects also carry Woodland scenics and are another of my regular online shops.

As to which product, alas I've never tried any snow effects ... but I am most curious to see what everyone suggests and might have a proper look when I'm in FLGS next week.

It depends how much snow you want. The games workshop 'technical' snow works find for melted snow patches. Not the cheapest but fine for normal bases. Definitely cheaper and probably better options if you want to cover a full chariot base etc...

I found it a lot easier than mixing bicarbonate of soda.

I have sculpted full snowfields in green stuff but that was a chore.

Just be aware bicarb goes yellow over time.
thanks, now that you mention, I might have read that before . However on my model it's still white after 5 years,

probly the white acrylic paint is just hiding the soda yellowing.

I do have a snowy Mt. top project coming up, so will experiment and see what is best. The hobby-snow stuff in bags is cheap enough, especially if you order other things to combine shipping costs.

Kinda appropriate? 😉
every winter Warg deserves a patch of yellow snow
white craft-foam? polystyrene?
yes, it's commonly called "craft foam" but it's XPS , expanded polystyrene. comes in many forms, i use the Pink stuff to build up terrain. It's hard/dense, rigid, and soft to touch.
The stuff for snow is very coarse, also rigid, and very airy. It also has some reflectivity to it, so if your last layer is a light dusting of this it can produce a specific effect

I've used bicarb and it works but does go slightly yellow over time. The AK stuff looks good but needing to buy different products to get the effect seems rather expensive. I think I'll hold off as its going to be a while before I'm ready for the snow.

This is the model I'm wanting snow for. (early WIP)
