Rogue Trader Eldar

Lord
So planning a break from the rats to paint something completely out of my comfort zone...40k Eldar. Hoping someone with more knowledge than me could tell me the base sizes needed, especially for the actual figures plus dreadnoughts and war walkers.

personally? I use 25mm round for 40K stuff (this would be rogue trader and 2nd edition). Dreadnoughts and war walkers are the same sizes about 40mm or 50mm square but these days, I would probably use a round with them too..

Thanks for the info I've ordered a small batch.

So fate has taken a turn in the shape of a £75 lottery win, which means its full steam ahead with my plans for a little Eldar band. First ebay purchases are in the dettol and picked some colours I'm thinking of using.

We have Dark Sea Grey, Sky Grey, Emerald, Blue green and Deep Yellow. Not sure if it will be all of them or just some. I will have to do some tests to see what I like.

£75 lottery win,
Bases, bases for everyone!

the base sizes needed
I'm actually slowly rebasing the Eldar I bought at auction that I was leaving as they are (painted by Robin Ewbank) a while back, so they are coming off 25mm rounds and going onto glorious hex bases! Not sure quite why, but I have a fondness of hex bases - not that I'm able to source original GW ones - that'd require a substantial lottery win of my own! :)

Anyhow as manic says traditionally 25mm rounds for figures and 40mm squares for walkers. Mine are going on 25mm hexes and 45mm hexes as the 40mm hexes looks too small (measured face to face).

Getting quite tempted to start the additions I had planned for my own Eldar, although they are not supposed to be next in the painting queue.

One thing I am getting good at is noticing the subtle differences between the 1st and 2nd edition models especially dreadnoughts and war walkers.
Oh? do tell... I've not got many of the physical models to check with but haven't seen much difference if any...

Well the obvious change are the new weapons added to the arsenal, then you have the change to the artillery base 1st has a slim gav platform and also a 3 legged shielded and then by 2nd its a larger gav platform. Then with the dreadnoughts, there is a change to how the weapons are attached going from a small little adapter between the body and arm to it actually being part of the back pack and the shuriken weapons on arms is moved from being on top to being placed underneath. The last one I've noticed but am unsure if its an actual change is 1st edition war walker has plain looking weapon shields but the 2nd edition has a lot more going on but it could be that in the photos I've seen the shield parts have just been reversed ?

things like new weapons are kinda a given as not a change but more options

but never noticed any of the other bits. some photos often are reversed which is... annoying ^_^ also, there is a bit of a problem with some photos being... well, not 100% customised but put together differently.

But I 100% believe that they probably did retool parts for various reasons or just completely remade some parts.

of course, Eldar tech was re-used alot.. War walkers were the same as dreadnaughts but with a cockpit instead of a head, then you got the War Robot Spirit walker which was most of the dreadnaught with some differences.. Of course, the original dreadnaught had things like the War demon version, the Bashshee support version, the Warcry version where the 'torso' part was laying down... they really got there money's worth on that set of moulds

I imagine making the back pack also hold the weapon made sense instead of having to have 2 small separate pieces. As I'm only wanting a small 1st edition force the extra weapon choices brought out with 2nd is a real pain in the arse as so many items on Ebay have a later weapon choice or say 1 original arm but then a later version for the other.

Dreadnaughts weren't until the expansions of the rules which fleshed out a bit but I think the rogue trader weapons for dreadnaughts were:
War Cry: Right Shuriken Catapult arm with Las-Cannon on left
War Demon: Left Shuriken Catapult arm, left shuriken catapult arm
Banshee: Right Flamer arm, Missile launcher (with multi-weapon mount) Left Flamer arm

still early but later (before 2nd) added:
War Walker: pilot attached to the body instead of a head, 2 Shield mounts with Las-cannon and Scatter Laser
Spirit Warrior: new 'Robot' head, Scatter laser attaching on the left via the same gun mount as the War cry, Right Shuriken Catapult arm
Spirit Warrior B: Heavy plasma gun or D-cannon

what weapons did they add for 2ed?

ugh.... now I got about 2 dreadnaughts and a war walker on it's way and a couple of bits for some conversion work cause... I decided why not ^_^;

Finally an actual picture. Models stripped and undercoated and looking at them I'm really out of my comfort zone !!!

As I'm really not sure about a colour scheme I can definitely see myself stripping them again if I'm not happy with my first attempt.

I know what you mean - I've never painted an Eldar mini. Since I don't think we're keeping it to 100 anymore you can post your first efforts on:
I was going to throw mine up when I eventually get to them. Right now I'm doing the repairs to the painted, but damaged ones I have.

Eggs and grandmothers aside.
You say stripping them...?

Given your uncertainty are you not painting just one as a test, or are you going all in batch colour painting method and hoping for the best?

Trying on one then if I don't like move on to next and put that one in the dettol bath. My main issue is I don't do fine detail and these buggers are all fine detail !!!

I wouldn’t worry about it too much, they are essentially only 3-4 blocks of colour (under suit, plates, weapon and accent colour) as per the old Rogue Trader colour plate? The soul stones don’t need to be individually painted?

First test piece. Originally went with Blue Green body with Yellow helmet but quickly realised it was very similar to the blue/yellow scheme they appeared in back in the day, so changed the yellow for emerald. Yellow was instead used on the eyes and the weapons are just bronze as is the face grill thing. The bodysuit/chainmail is just grey.

I think I'm going to sleep on it and come back to it in a day or two. Somethings I like, some I'm not sure and I'm also aware that the base and what I do with that could also effect the final colour scheme .
