Raedwald's painted stuff

Raedwald

Vassal
About time I posted some of my efforts here.

Despite having a sizeable lead pile, shamefully few of my painted minis are from my Oldhammer collection so far; having moved to other metal manufacturers since the mid/late '90s due to a parsimonious nature. :)

I painted these dwarves a couple of years ago to use for Frostgrave. The classic adventurers are combined with Foundry spellcasters, the treasure hunter from the Green Dragon box, a Marauder Hammerer, and a dog from Crooked Dice. This was my first (only to date) use of the slap chop painting method, which really was shockingly quick but pleasingly effective.

The wings, the marble ball, and yes, the doggo (who looks a bit like an doggo who once kept me company . . . Why are rotties always depicted growling? They're usually such sweet dogs in my experience.) Anyway, lovely!

Thanks all!

Great stuff! Loads of atmosphere there. I especially like the prospectors in the last photo, proper dirty.
Yeah, I wanted a dark grubby look, inspired by the White Dwarf we all know and love.

Very nice, especially like the doggo.
It came with an Alsatian and a Doberman in a pack of three, nice realistic scale.

Really nice. Some proper characters going on there, think the scrolly wizard with his hand on his hat is my favourite.
He's one of my favourites too, packed with character and lovely details, so matches the adventurers well.

Thanks, glad the iridescent wings and the ball got noticed, they're some little special touches to give the band some character.

Cheers!

I have those classic dwarf adventurers too! They are in the box to strip and repaint.
Have you considered another lighter dry brush before adding washes/contrast paint? Should help the colour stand out better.

Hi Brother Meredith, good tip. This was my first go at slap chop, all were drybrushed greyscale, can't remember if I went all the way to white. Then used first generation Speedpaints I picked up cheap, before touching up with a few highlights.

Catching up on threads. Lovely set of adventuring dwarves. I found with the goblinoids I did slapchop on I had to take the underpaint right up to pure white for the best result.

I'm also a fan of themed warbands and this bunch of dwarf adventurers and loyal hound look really nice. Love the sculpted (and painted!) details on these old sculpts. Did they get any games under their belt and how'd they fare?

@Eric - Thank you! I'm having another go at slapchop now, on some elves - have gone up to white for sure this time. Haven't done the colouring in bit yet, but hopefully will get some decent results.

@Geroak II - Cheers, and yes, only one game to date. They whupped some Goblins in a game of Frostgrave. Hope it's not bad etiquette to link to another forum, but I did a write up of it here: https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=142108.0
Once I've got enough elves painted I'm hoping to pit them against the dwarves later this year.

Having bought a copy of Oakbound Studio's 'The Woods' last year I was inspired to put together a warband, so used it as the ideal opportunity to get some of my beloved Wood Elves off the lead pile.

I don't get much hobby time (and paint horribly slowly), but eight months later the warband is ready!

Pict inspired grimdark Wood Elves; Jes Goodwin's finest wardancers and archers, led by my favourite Heartbreaker Earthdawn elf. Delighted to have finally got some paint on these, and I hope to expand to a small 'army' eventually.

oooooh

Nice overall feel, nice tones, good brushwork and a reminder that Earthdawn was a thing!!

What is not to like?

(what are the lines on the base edge?)

They look great, love the pale skin tones. Proper moody wood elves.
Also, delighted to have prompted such fine work!
Thanks Fimm! That's not all, I've got 5 - 6 minis queued but after that you've given me the dilemma: do I keep building up the Wood Elves, or address my long term love of the Fimir and build a Myeri warband?

Thanks! Earthdawn's been a big influence in my hobbying throughout my life, I've got a huge collection of sourcebooks and grabbed quite a few of the minis back in the day.

The lines on the bases are 'lines of engagement' needed for The Woods game system.

Well... I don't want to give the game away too much just yet, but the Myeri are firmly ensconced whilst the Fae Walkers have walked off the website. They will be back, but not quite as they were. ;)
